In the early years of our marriage, one of our Bible professors shared some wise advice with us. Take a walk together in the evening and pray. Walks provide a valuable opportunity to connect with another person and the Almighty One who created it all.

Feel the breeze blowing. Inhale the beauty of flowers, grass, and trees. Smile as birds, squirrels, and rabbits scamper across the path ahead. Tilt your head back and look up at the sky. Observe the cloud formation, sun, moon, and stars. Take time to appreciate the beauty in this world.

When I go for a walk, I take time to pray for other people and situations in my life. The Lord reminds me of friends’ names and details in their lives. I like to pray out loud. Sometimes, I even start singing a hymn or worship song.

Walking is an excellent activity for both our physical and emotional well-being. Moreover, it can allow us to bond with someone like our spouse, child, or friend. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of walking with many friends in various states. We have shared stories of life, much laughter, and even sadness during our walks. We also share Bible verses and pray together.

A daily walk with God strengthens my spiritual life. It’s all about my relationship with Jesus and my need to spend time every day with Him — in the Bible, in prayer, waiting before Him in silence. Fellowship results when I purposefully walk with God every day. He is my Savior, Friend, and Lord. I want to know Him better and walk close to Him.

Walking has many benefits for physical, emotional, and mental health. It can also serve as a reminder to cultivate a deeper spiritual relationship with God.

Recording our thoughts in a journal each evening is a helpful practice. This exercise allows us to reflect on the day, practice gratitude, and slow down before sleep.

I encourage you to take a few moments and jot down two or three observations from your daily walk. Keep your entry simple so it can easily fit into your daily routine. Then, write a sentence of gratitude to the Lord for the beauty of His creation and the gift of this day.

In the past, we’ve had camping trips with excellent meals, hiking, canoeing, and late-night campfire conversations. Other outings were less enjoyable—rainy days, wet clothes, burned pancakes, and sleepless nights.

The apostle Paul did a lot of “camping” during his ministry. There were days when his mission team walked many miles and had very little to eat. We know he faced struggles and hardships—times of scarcity and hunger. Paul chose to trust God in every situation he faced. It was a daily decision.

In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul tells them he has learned the secret of living in every situation. He declares, “I have enough. I am content.” Paul learned the secret and practiced contentment.

Learning does not just happen. We must pursue and consistently practice expressing our thankfulness. Paul calls us to live daily, in every circumstance, with a spirit of contentment.

Enjoy God’s gifts of abundance because He delights in blessing His children. In times of need, recognize that His provision will be sufficient and His strength will be available in every situation you face.

Relying on our own strength will accomplish little. Paul’s life exemplified godly humility, recognizing that Jesus Christ was the source of his strength.

Pursue the secret of contentment.

• Paul said, “I know what it is to …”

  • Gratitude will transform your heart and thoughts. Gratitude makes what we have sufficient, forming the foundation for peace.

  • A simple gratitude list is helpful because it directs our attention to the good gifts in our lives.

Jesus Christ is your source of strength.

• Paul said, “I can do everything through Christ.”

  • Acknowledge your need, and ask God to give you the strength to complete the work He has called you to do.

  • Strive to focus on God in every circumstance.

I can live humbly in challenging times and enjoy abundance during prosperous times.

It’s not about having NOTHING. It’s about having ENOUGH.

In the Old Testament, the book of Nehemiah presents an extraordinary man. We know he was not perfect (see Nehemiah 1:6), yet he was a devoted worshiper of the One True God. He recognized the Lord as the great and awesome God (Nehemiah 1:5; Psalm 70:4). He trusted in God’s truthfulness and relied on His covenant-keeping love for those who walk in His ways. This man humbled himself before the Almighty God of heaven!

Nehemiah faithfully served the king in a foreign land. He adhered to the royal court’s regulations and remained loyal to the regime. He was trusted to hold the king’s confidence in private conversations, political discussions, and government decisions.

In the late autumn, Nehemiah received troubling news from his brother. I shared this in an earlier blog post. He sat down and wept, and for days he mourned for the people of Jerusalem. He fasted and prayed to the God of heaven.

A few months passed, and in early spring Nehemiah was serving King Artaxerxes his wine. It was not acceptable to show sadness in the king’s presence. However, the king recognized that his faithful cupbearer was deeply troubled and asked, “Why are you looking so sad?”

Nehemiah had prayed for weeks and months. He had asked the Lord to restore the gates and walls of Jerusalem. Now the king asked him, “How can I help?” The Lord opened a door for Nehemiah to speak, but he knew he must speak respectfully. Nehemiah prayed silently to the God of heaven before he spoke.

Nehemiah was a gifted administrator. In his conversation with the king, he outlined key elements of his plan. He recognized that his envoy would need the king’s permission to travel safely from Susa to Judah. Nehemiah requested a letter to Asaph, asking for timber from the king’s forest. Nehemiah had spent many hours in prayer, and God had guided his thoughts toward restoring the gates and city walls.

Nehemiah recognized the importance of the work and believed God was calling him to lead his people in completing this major reconstruction project. I can only imagine the thoughts, plans, and ideas racing through his mind. He would need to seek the Lord’s guidance and apply sound strategy and wise management skills.

Even as the king granted Nehemiah permission to travel to Jerusalem to oversee the rebuilding of the city’s gates and walls, Nehemiah offered praise to God. Nehemiah believed the Lord had called him to this work and credited God with the king’s favorable response to his requests.

Do you recall a specific time when you felt God’s gracious hand upon you? Take a moment to reflect on the details of that experience. How did He provide for and care for you? What was your response to the Lord?

Prayer can feel difficult at times because of fatigue, distractions, guilt, or a sense of distance from God. Yet prayer is about presence rather than performance. You can speak simply, honestly, and briefly, for example, by saying “Help me.” When words fail, it helps to pray verses from Scripture (such as the Psalms) or the Lord’s Prayer.

Keep it Simple: Prayer is simply talking to God. If you can only say, “Father, I’m here,” that is enough.

Pray Scripture: Use the Psalms to express your feelings when you cannot find your own words.

Rely on the Holy Spirit: Remember that the Spirit intercedes for you, especially when you feel you can’t pray.

Lean on Community: Ask a trusted friend or mentor to pray for you or with you.

Focus on God’s Character: Remind yourself of God’s love and care rather than dwelling on fear, guilt, shame, discouragement, or inadequacy.

The hymn’s author, C. Austin Miles, had just read John 20 and was moved by the garden meeting between the resurrected Jesus and His faithful follower, Mary Magdalene. As Miles reflected on this beautiful scene, he was drawn to consider his personal relationship with Jesus and the opportunity to meet Him in a garden.

Mary’s heart was heavy with grief. She had witnessed Jesus’s crucifixion. After the soldiers confirmed His death, she watched Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus carry His body to the nearby garden tomb. Mary sat across from the tomb, watching them wrap the body and lay it on the cold stone ledge.

Early on the third morning, she returned to the garden and found an empty tomb. Her eyes brimming with tears, she asked, “Sir … tell me where you have put Him.”

Can you imagine hearing the resurrected Jesus speak your name? My friend, He knows your name. Too often, we hurry about, make noise, and get caught up in the world’s distractions, and as a result, we miss His still, small voice.

Bible reading, prayer, and seeking God’s guidance are essential to spiritual growth and well-being. We must also cultivate quiet and silence in our personal time with the Lord. A wise and godly mentor once told me that discerning the Lord’s voice takes time. She encouraged me to be still and wait patiently.

The words of this hymn often draw me into a peaceful time with Jesus, serving as a gentle reminder – “and the joy that we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”

What would it be like to meet your Lord and Savior—face-to-face—in a lovely garden? To hear Him speak your name. How would you respond—fall to your knees in worship or begin to speak words of adoration and praise for Him?

Perhaps you have a favorite place to sit—peaceful, calm, and quiet. I encourage you to go to this spot and spend time with the Lord today. You might begin by reading a passage of Scripture, then sit quietly. Remember, the Lord teaches us and gently guides our steps when we sit with Him—quiet, patient, and still.

You may have felt uncertain about where you would live while attending college or relocating for a new job. These situations can make us feel very troubled and unsure.

Jesus was speaking with His closest disciples. He knew tough times were ahead for them. His goal was to give courage and strength to their hearts and minds. He wants us to let go of the fear in our hearts and believe in the Heavenly Father and in Him.

Jesus assures us that there are many rooms in the Father’s house. He has gone to prepare a place for everyone who chooses to believe in God and the redemption offered through the shed blood of Jesus.

What do you imagine the rooms will look like in the Father’s house? I had several specific reasons for choosing the room pictured here. These simple elements evoke peace and calm in my heart.

• The windows let in light and offer a view to the outside.

• The walls are white, representing purity and cleanliness.

• The candle and guitar set the scene for praise and worship.

• The wood stove provides warmth and a welcoming atmosphere.

• The couch offers plenty of space for friends in Jesus to gather — an ideal spot to praise, worship, and magnify the precious name of Jesus.

Jesus spoke to them honestly and sincerely. He wanted His followers to trust in His return. Jesus promised them an abundant life and an eternal home with Him. We will spend eternity with Jesus!

However, we often feel anxious, doubt, worry, or fret. Thomas’ words may address some of the concerns you have raised. Most of us can relate to his question. I’m so grateful that Jesus welcomes our questions and does not push us away. His answer provides clear instructions.

These are Jesus’ kind words of invitation. No one is left out. Come to Jesus. When we follow Him, we find peace and joy. He invites us to spend eternity with Him in the Father’s house. Jesus is preparing a room for you.

What do you imagine your heavenly room will look like in the Father’s house? We can dream and imagine the room that Jesus has gone to prepare for us. Are there some items you would ask Him to include?

Consider these aspects of our worship to the Lord.

Who will we worship? Why will we worship Him?

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”

How will we worship?

I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

The book of Nehemiah is part of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and is combined with the book of Ezra. These two books provide details about rebuilding Jerusalem and its walls after the Babylonian conquest of Judah and the destruction of the city.

The Hebrew title for the cupbearer was mashqeh, meaning “one who gives to drink.” Not only did he taste the king’s wine to prevent poisoning, but he likely also served as a royal advisor to King Artaxerxes. He was in the presence of King Artaxerxes every day. Nehemiah was a highly trusted member of the Persian royal court.

Position, power, and privilege can cloud human judgment. This may have been true for Nehemiah, but he did not succumb to these temptation traps.

Nehemiah was a remarkable man of God. This book highlights the qualities of someone who trusted in the Lord and consistently sought His guidance and counsel.

First, he was a faithful servant. Nehemiah was loyal and served the king in a foreign land. He followed the rules and regulations of the royal court. He was trusted to keep the king’s confidence in private conversations, political discussions, and government decisions.

One day, Nehemiah’s brother Hanani arrived at the fortress in Susa from Judah. Nehemiah greeted him and inquired about the Jews in Jerusalem. His brother delivered a troubling report.

The cupbearer was heartbroken and overwhelmed with sorrow! How could this be? Nehemiah wept, mourned for his people and Jerusalem, and he fasted and prayed.

Though he received disturbing news, Nehemiah took his sorrow to the Lord. He poured out his heart to the Lord.

Nehemiah was a devoted worshiper of the One True God. He recognizes the Lord as the great and awesome God. He trusts in God’s truthfulness and relies on His covenant keeping love for those who walk in His ways. Nehemiah confesses the sins of Israel, including his own family and himself. This man humbles himself before the Almighty God of heaven!

Nehemiah offers a helpful and encouraging example of prayer for us.

I’m reminded of the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” which encourages believers to bring every burden, care, and weakness to the Lord in prayer.

Take time to reflect on the words of this hymn and fill in the blanks for the following phrases.

Jesus is my faithful friend …

• I can bring all my sins to Him.

• I can bring my grief and sorrow to Him.

What peace do I forfeit when I do not come to Jesus?

What pain do I carry when I do not bring it to Jesus?

What trials or temptations am I facing right now?

Is there trouble in my life today?

Do I feel discouraged today? Can I describe it?

The desire to be loved and understood is a natural human need. Friends, this is part of God’s creative plan. There are days when we feel lonely or like we’ve been ignored. You probably don’t have to think long to recall a specific situation, group, or gathering where you felt unnoticed or excluded.

This week, I reflected on three words: The Lord knows. They are simple but profound. My first thoughts went to everyday life. He knows when I am happy, angry, sad, or fearful. Yet, I sensed a deeper, more meaningful truth and looked to the Bible for insight. There is a wealth of hidden meaning in these words.

In our English Bibles, we see “Lord,” “God,” and “the Lord” used without distinguishing among them. We read these words and often miss their true meanings. However, in the Hebrew Scriptures, we can see the differences between the names. God’s specific names offer us a glimpse of His character and reveal the deeper meaning behind them.

“The Lord” is the Hebrew name for Jehovah. This name is used most frequently and appears over 6,500 times in Scripture. Every time we see “The Lord” in verses, it reminds us that He is a relational, personal God. The Lord wants to have a personal relationship with you and me. We are precious in His sight.

“Jehovah is the aspect of God that relates to His creation personally ... Jehovah is the God who personally reveals Himself to us, often through the trials and struggles we face.” (Dr. Tony Evans, The Power of God’s Names, p. 45)

Now, let’s explore the meaning of “knows.” This word comes from the Hebrew word “yada.” It signifies knowing deeply and through experience, including observation, care, recognition, instruction, or punishment.

Instead of running into the open arms of a loving God, many of us turn to people, food, activities, or other things to soothe our emotions. It is God’s desire for us to seek Him with our whole heart. He wants to know us deeply and have personal relationships with us.

The Lord knows… a relational and personal God who understands everything about us on a deep level. Even though He is aware of our sins and flaws, He continues to pursue meaningful, intimate relationships. The end of Keller’s quote sums it up perfectly: “To be fully known and truly loved is a lot like being loved by God.”

Dear Ones, there is so much going on in the world, as shared in the daily news. We can easily become distracted, fearful, and anxious. Sitting at my desk this morning, I am thinking about friends and family who live all around the world.

I ask each of us this question: “Where do you run?”

Caught in the whirlwind of your day and week, does your heart feel lonely, angry, frightened, or sad? Share your heart with Him. He is waiting to hear everything you want to tell Him.

Finish this sentence according to your current circumstance, challenge, trial, or struggle.

Over the past week, I have taken time to reflect on the words and phrases in Ephesians 3. This blog post will be a little different as I share some thoughts for us to consider while meditating on the words of this powerful prayer. I invite you to engage your curiosity as we explore Paul’s prayer together.

• Imagine the apostle Paul kneeling and fervently praying these words on our behalf to our Heavenly Father.

• He presented his petitions to the Lord with humility and submission.

• He affirms that we are God’s beloved children—members of His family.

• Say your name aloud. This prayer is for you.

• Consider the glorious riches of the Father – more riches than we can even imagine (see Ephesians 1:18 – You will inherit all of God’s riches).

• You receive strength and power through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Turn to Him and wait expectantly for His generous provision.

• This is Paul’s prayer request for his fellow believers: that Jesus would reign supreme in our hearts.

• Keep trusting because Christ dwells within the believer’s heart.

• Rooted and established in love – This phrase reminds me of “a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when heat comes” (Jeremiah 17:8).

• The words in verse 18 aim to help readers comprehend the vast, four-dimensional scope of Christ’s love.

  • Width – His love extends to the entire world (John 3:16).

  • Length – His love stretches from eternity past to eternity future.

  • Height – His love elevates both Jews and Gentiles to heavenly places.

  • Depth – His love is deep enough to save us from sin’s shame and the eternal death of Satan’s grasp.

• This is an ongoing process for the believer in Jesus Christ. He does not expect us to be perfect, but rather He calls us to humbly walk with Him today.

• The Lord is not harsh. Instead, He shows kindness and compassion to everyone who seeks Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

• What words of love might He speak over you today? He calls you into fellowship and desires for you to experience the full measure of His love, grace, and acceptance.

As you meditate on the words of Paul’s prayer for believers, consider these personal applications for your walk with God.

• How can I walk in the strength and power of the Holy Spirit?

• What is one way I can show my appreciation for Christ’s love today?

Although this was a child’s game, its purpose was to teach young children the importance of following instructions. It is also essential for both children and adults to assess whether a leader can be trusted and should be obeyed.

Come, Follow Me

Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee and invited two fishermen, “Come, follow me.” It’s notable that Jesus called two brothers. Simon (Peter) and Andrew already worked together—fishing on the Sea of Galilee late at night, hauling in their nets, cleaning fish, and repairing their gear.

This was not a casual invitation to become His disciples; rather, it meant leaving behind their familiar way of life. Jesus used an example that Simon and Andrew would easily understand. They were fishermen by trade—born and raised on the Sea of Galilee. They had endured hard work, storms at sea, and discouragement after a failed night of fishing.

Simon and Andrew would no longer earn a living from fishing. Instead, they would spend their time listening to Jesus’ teachings and instructions. They would begin walking a new path of life with Him and invite others to follow Jesus.

Immediately

Walking a little farther, Jesus calls two more brothers—James and John—who work with their father, Zebedee, fishing on the Sea of Galilee. Once again, brothers.

Three of these men were Jesus’ closest companions during His earthly ministry. Simple fishermen called into ministry that would change their lives and play key roles in spreading the gospel message.

Jesus’ disciples believed in Him and trusted Him. Throughout the Gospels, we see how they sought to follow His example and learn how to live in a way that would bring glory to their Heavenly Father.

Psalm 90 is the only psalm written by Moses. While living in Pharaoh’s palace, he received a comprehensive education. Moses grew in wisdom and was powerful in both speech and action. As expected, Moses provides us with profound wisdom and guidance in Psalm 90.

He was about forty years old when he committed a serious sin—murdering an Egyptian overseer—and he fled to the Midianite desert. The next forty years were spent serving his father-in-law as a shepherd of sheep before God specifically called him to lead and shepherd the people of Israel out of Egypt. Moses’ name is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible. He faithfully served the Lord.

Most of us want to retire by age 80, so verse ten might seem daunting or impossible. However, I know many friends and family members who are in their eighties or nineties, and they faithfully live each day with the strength the Lord gives. Each one is a great example of living purposefully to please God.

TEACH US

First, he emphasizes the importance of learning and receiving instruction. We need a coach or tutor to teach us new concepts and lessons. However, we must be willing to accept the teacher’s guidance and training.

Ask the Lord to show you how to number your days.

• How should I use my time?

• What activities will I choose to fill my schedule?

• Who will I spend my time with?

When we seek to learn and practice these lessons, our hearts will grow in wisdom (see Proverbs 2:10).

SATISFY US

Moses asks the Lord to fill us with His love. This is not a secret formula or magic potion. We make choices about where to focus our attention. What will our perspective be when we open our eyes each morning? Will we align our minds with what the Spirit desires and live according to the Spirit (see Romans 8:5)?

Do you begin your morning expecting the Lord to meet your needs through His faithful, covenant-keeping love? When we experience, recognize, and acknowledge the Lord’s love, our lips will sing with joy, and our hearts will be full of gladness.

ESTABLISH US

In conclusion, Moses prays for God to bless His people with favor. It is the Lord who establishes us and determines our value and worth. The work of our hands is insignificant unless the Lord guides and directs our efforts. Although we are frail sinners, God’s love, kindness, and compassion can transform our weaknesses into offerings for His glory.

Number your days. There are 365 days in a year.

Subtract your current age from eighty. Then multiply that number by 365. What is the result? Note: If you are older than 80 years, calculate the additional days and years of blessing that the Lord has given you. Thank Him for the strength He has provided.

Look closely at that number. What are your thoughts about the number of days you might have to live your life?

• Are you living each day in the strength of the Lord?

• Do you seek to gain wisdom from the Lord?

• Is your heart filled with a joyful song because of God’s unfailing love?

Dear Heavenly Father,

Just as Moses asked for the beauty of Your favor to rest upon Your people, I humbly bow before You today. Would You grant me the strength, wisdom, joy, and gladness to live today for Your glory? I pray that You would establish the work of my hands. Amen.

When I go for a walk, I take time to pray for others and for situations in my life. The Lord reminds me of friends’ names and details about their lives. I even pray out loud because it helps me stay focused. Sometimes, I start singing a hymn or worship song.

This well-known hymn is among my favorites.

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder

Watch the cloud formations, the sun, the moon, and the stars. Take a moment to cherish the beauty of this world.

Writing in a journal each evening is a helpful habit. It encourages us to reflect on the day, practice gratitude, and relax before sleep.

I urge you to take a few moments to jot down two or three observations from your daily walk. Keep your entry simple so it easily fits into your daily routine. Write a sentence of gratitude to the Lord for the beauty of His creation and the gift of this day.

Last summer, I went to a baseball game with one of our sons and his family. We had good seats in the outfield, but the July sun was shining down on us the entire game. It was so hard to sit still, and by the eighth inning, I was hoping for the game to end soon. All of us were very thirsty and incredibly hot!

In Psalm 51, David turns to the Lord during a difficult time in his life. The prophet Nathan had come into the royal court and confronted him about his sin of adultery and murder. Where could David turn? He wisely chooses to humble himself before the Lord.

Yes, David’s heart and soul were stained by sin, but his desire was to seek God’s mercy and grace and be restored in his heart's relationship with the Lord.

You delight in truth

The verb, delight, almost seems out of place here. At its core meaning, it points to satisfaction or pleasure. David acknowledges that God is the all-knowing One.

God desires inner righteousness from those who truly follow Him. He absolutely does “delight” in truth because He is Truth (see John 14:6), and He calls His children to walk in truth.

You teach me wisdom

Maybe you recall a particular teacher who was outstanding. You stayed engaged during each lecture, studied hard, and finished the course with a good grade.

Our Heavenly Father invites us to join the course of wisdom. It’s a demanding journey, and we will be part of it for our entire lives. I’ve realized that it involves constantly humbling myself before the Lord and seeking repentance.

The inward being || The secret heart

What does God expect? He doesn’t just want outward acts of obedience. Instead, the Lord desires complete honesty and a sincere heart fully committed to Him.

Am I completely honest with Him, or am I hiding behind shame, fear, or guilt? He knows the deepest, most secret part of my heart. Will I willingly bow before Him and admit my desperate need for His forgiveness, mercy, and grace?

We can be freed from the burden of our hidden hearts, and God can erase our secret guilt. Remember, God sees everything. When we approach Him in humility and sincerity, He will reveal what needs to be cleansed and forgiven in our hearts.

Find a peaceful spot and sit before the Lord. Read the following verses aloud.

The first verse and refrain of the hymn “Open My Eyes” encourage quiet reflection and genuine repentance before the Lord.

Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Some other hikers encouraged us to try a different trail and promised that the view was even more spectacular. We took this new path and were excited to see more sights. The trail narrowed and became steeper. The terrain was rocky and uneven. As the sun rose higher, our water bottles were completely drained.

Feelings of discouragement and defeat started to set in, and we wondered if we had made a big mistake. Reaching the top of the difficult peak, we were rewarded with a stunning view that stretched for miles.

The book of Exodus recounts the Israelites’ miraculous escape from Egyptian bondage. The first twelve chapters describe Pharaoh’s harsh treatment—killing babies, slavery, and abusing them. God chose a leader, Moses, and called him to confront Pharaoh with His message, “Let My people go.” After ten devastating plagues and the destruction of Egypt’s wealth and power, the Israelites fled from Egypt.

The people of Israel began their journey filled with hope and excitement for a new life in the Promised Land. The quickest route to the Promised Land was along the great Mediterranean Sea. They believed the Lord wanted them to settle in their new land as soon as possible. But God’s mighty hand of protection and divine guidance were with them.

The Lord understood that their faith would need time to grow and strengthen. God wanted His chosen people to trust Him fully. The years they spent in Egypt had drawn their hearts toward idolatry and many false gods.

Each of us faces difficult times in life. We may even feel confused and question God’s purpose and plan for us. Over the years, these verses have provided comfort and strength to my heart and mind. I truly hope you find encouragement as you read and reflect on Exodus 13:17-18.

We all experience detours in our lives. Take a moment now to recall one of God’s desert roads in your life. Here are some writing prompts to help you remember.

• How old were you at the time?

• Where did you live?

• Who was with you on this desert road?

• When did you realize that God had a specific purpose and plan?

• Why was it necessary for you to walk God’s desert road?

• What new truths has God shown you since that specific detour?

Thank the Lord for leading you on the desert road. Ask Him to teach you His truth and to direct your steps according to His purpose and plan.

These childhood memories planted a seed in my heart to study and meditate on God’s Word. The Lord guided me to Bible college and seminary, and I am thankful for the time I spent learning more about the Bible.

We see the evidence of the living and powerful Word of God in the very first chapter of the Bible. Genesis 1 teaches us that, for each day of creation, “God said,” and it happened exactly as He spoke.

• Day One – Genesis 1:3-5 – “It was good.”

• Day Two – Genesis 1:6-8 – “And it was so.”

• Day Three – Genesis 1:9-13 – “God saw that it was good.”

• Day Four – Genesis 1:14-19 – “God saw that it was good.”

• Day Five – Genesis 1:20-23 – “God saw that it was good.”

• Day Six – Genesis 1:24-25 – “God saw that it was good.” / Genesis 1:26-31 – “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”

Throughout Scripture, there are examples of God’s Word powerfully guiding His children, judging people’s sins, and encouraging His followers in their daily lives.

When I think about the sharp, two-edged sword, I am reminded of the surgeon’s scalpel. With skilled hands, the surgeon’s goal is to remove infection, cancer, or to repair broken bones. God’s purpose is to bring life and genuine healing to each of us. Yet, we often resist the Word of God instead of submitting to His work to restore the deepest parts of our hearts, souls, minds, and spirits.

The Word of God can distinguish the thoughts and attitudes of our hearts. Often, these are like locked closets hidden in the back recesses of our lives. God’s Word can reveal, examine, analyze, and judge the thoughts and attitudes of our hearts and minds.

This kind of openness might feel intimidating to you. But friends, Jesus said that He is the light of the world. He invites us to bring every part of our lives out of darkness and into the light. God’s Word brings new life, power, and freedom.

Many years have gone by since I spent those precious summer weeks with my grandparents. Still, their habit of reading God’s Word daily continues to influence my heart and mind. It is a choice I must make every day to open my Bible and read a passage of Scripture. Maybe you face a similar challenge. I’m reminded that this practice isn’t just an item on my daily to-do list, but rather something that calls to my heart.

Will you choose God’s Word? Does your time in God’s Word begin the process of change in your life? Is the fruit of the Spirit growing and evident in your attitudes, words, and actions?

Reaching the bottom of the deep end required training and practice. This included arm and leg strength and breath control. The joy was immense when a swimmer returned to the surface with the heavy weight in hand!

God’s Word contains many deep and precious treasures that offer us glimpses into understanding the Lord. Our heavenly Father invites each of us to seek out “the deep things of God.” We cannot “measure God” because we are finite beings. However, we can explore, read, and meditate on His Word to gain a better knowledge of Him.

The apostle Paul combined two conflicting truths and used them as declarations of praise. While we do not fully understand the greatness of our Almighty God, it is our privilege to learn more about the Lord, grow in understanding, and grasp more of His infinite majesty.

Does curiosity stir in your heart as you read a passage of Scripture? It helps to ask questions—Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How—as we explore Bible verses and passages. God invites us to come closer and seek to know Him more.

A woman visited my office a few years ago, and I will always remember our meaningful conversation. She shared one of her favorite Bible study tips with me. After reading a passage of Scripture, she takes time to identify specific attributes of God. Recognizing these traits became a regular part of her worship and praise for the Lord.

This Bible study tool has strengthened my personal walk with the Lord. I encourage you to include this practice in your Bible study time. What limitless attributes of God would you like to explore and understand more deeply?

Here is an example of this study tool.

• God’s great love. How can I experience His love today?

• God’s abundant mercy. Identify an area in your life where you have not fully embraced His gift of mercy.

• God brought us to life in Christ Jesus. Am I truly living in the fullness of the Lord?

• God offers salvation through grace. Take time to thank the Lord for His free and unearned gift of eternal life—your salvation.

Dear Lord, thank You for extending Your mercy when I have acted sinfully, selfishly, and made foolish decisions. I praise You for the gift of steadfast love. You have stretched out Your gracious hand and given me new life in Christ Jesus. I want to grow in my knowledge of You. Help me to better understand God’s deep riches. Amen.

The Misfortune

In the opening chapter of the book of Ruth, we are introduced to a family: a husband, wife, and two sons. Due to a famine, they moved from Bethlehem to Moab. The family hoped to find a better life elsewhere. Over the next ten years, tragedy strikes. First, the husband, Elimelech, dies, leaving Naomi a widow. The two sons marry Moabite women. Tragically, each of Naomi’s sons also passes away (see Ruth 1:1-5).

Take a moment to reflect on Naomi’s situation—the famine in Bethlehem, the difficult journey to Moab, adapting to a new culture and environment, and losing her husband and two sons. We can understand her deep sorrow, distress, and heartbreak.

Life is full of challenging situations—illness, the loss of a family member, or losing a home or job. Moving or relocating can impact our physical, mental, and emotional health. The death of loved ones can also cause grief and emotional strain.

The Journey Back

Naomi heard that the rains had returned and that food was available again in Bethlehem. She decides to go back to her hometown, a long journey for a woman traveling alone. However, her two daughters-in-law insist on moving back with her. Soon, Naomi pauses along the way and asks Orpah and Ruth to return to their Moabite families. She reminds them that she can’t offer them a future in Bethlehem (see Ruth 1:8-9).

With sorrowful embraces, Orpah decides to return to her family in Moab. However, Ruth confidently declares her commitment to Naomi.

Ruth made a solemn vow to her mother-in-law, calling upon God’s punishment if she broke it. Naomi acknowledged her genuine resolve and determination. The two women continued their journey back to Naomi’s home in Bethlehem. How will these two widows survive the coming weeks and months?

The New Beginning

Naomi and Ruth arrive in Bethlehem. The townspeople are amazed and gather around as the women of Bethlehem greet them. Naomi’s heavy heart is filled with sorrow and deep loss. She reminds them that she left Bethlehem with a husband and two sons, yet she returns “empty.”

In her next statement, she said that the Lord brought suffering and tragedy upon her. The Lord had not turned against this family; they chose to go to Moab. Hard times are part of our lives in this fallen world, but God is not vindictive toward His people. It’s the Lord’s desire for each of us to seek Him and surrender to His will for our lives.

Every time I read the final verse in chapter one, a smile comes to my face. As Naomi tells the women to call her “Mara” (bitter) because she has returned “empty,” the text also highlights the faithful, loyal woman standing with her—Ruth the Moabite.

Naomi was not alone. God was watching over her. He had arranged for the young Moabitess to travel with her. Their arrival in Bethlehem—during barley harvest—marked a new beginning.

Writing down our thoughts can be a useful way to sort through different situations in life.

This is an acronym—FOCUS—that I have started using during my personal time with the Lord. Each simple truth helps me meditate on the Lord and lean into His Word for guidance, wisdom, and direction.

F – Faith
Heavenly Father, strengthen my faith. I believe You have a good purpose and plan for me.

O – Open my eyes
I know I can completely trust You and depend on Your truth.

C – Concern
Write down the specific concern you’re facing today and bring it to the Lord in prayer.

U – Understanding
Lord, I come to You and humbly ask for Your understanding.

S – Seek Him
I seek the Lord’s strength each day.

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

- James 1:9

Earlier this week, I started reading the book of 1 Samuel. Memories of Sunday School lessons from my childhood flooded my mind. This young boy, Samuel, was chosen to serve as one of God’s servants. He lived at the Tabernacle and served under Eli the priest.

The author wants readers to realize that the Lord had not spoken to His people—through messages or visions—for some time. Now, the Lord is about to deliver a surprising message about Israel’s future to this young boy, Samuel.

Samuel was in his bed when he heard a voice calling his name. He immediately responded and went to Eli. This happened twice, and Eli told Samuel to go back to bed. However, the third time, the old priest realized it must be God calling the boy. He advised Samuel on how to respond the next time he heard his name called.

Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never had a message from the Lord before. So, the Lord called a third time, and once more, Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”

I want to highlight Samuel’s quick response and obedience when his name was called. Three times, he heard someone calling him, and each time, he ran to Eli. Notice his words, “Here I am. Did you call me?” Samuel demonstrates the heart of a servant—listening and ready to obey and serve.

This time, the Lord called Samuel’s name twice and appeared beside him. Samuel listened as the Lord delivered a shocking message against the priest, Eli, and his family. The Lord’s judgment was because of the blasphemous behavior of his sons and Eli’s failure to discipline them (see 1 Samuel 3:11-18). Samuel shared everything God said with Eli. The priest received the hard words of judgment as the Lord’s will.

Samuel learned early in life to listen to the word of the Lord. He served the Lord faithfully throughout his entire life, and the Lord was with him.

When and where do you find time for peace and quiet with the Lord?

The peaceful stillness of the early morning hours brings joy and calm to my heart and soul. It’s a precious time to reflect on God’s Word and seek His guidance and direction.

Today’s Bible passage highlights the importance of listening to the Lord.

Sometimes my prayers just turn into my talking to God—listing my requests and asking the Lord to watch over family and friends.

Spend time reading a passage of Scripture, then highlight words, phrases, or sentences that stand out to you. Write them down on a notepad, pray over them, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, words, and actions according to His purpose and will.

Do you have an alarm clock next to your bed? Do you wear a wristwatch or rely on your cell phone to tell the time? Some people are so familiar with the sun’s pattern that they can tell the time by its position in the sky.

In God’s master plan, He created time, seasons, the rotation of the sun, the moon, and the stars. The lives of every human depend on a sovereign God. Every activity, event, and thing falls into God’s timing, purpose, and perfect will.

In Ecclesiastes 3:2-8, fourteen couplets illustrate the full spectrum of life’s seasons, all under God’s sovereign rule. Life encompasses many different experiences. Instead of losing hope, we should trust God more completely and accept each season as a good gift.

The first couplet symbolizes the beginning and end of human life, emphasizing its fleeting, natural cycle. The next one reflects agricultural patterns—both new beginnings and essential endings.

This pair illustrates moments of justice or necessary destruction, and times of restoration and mercy. There are occasions when life calls for rebuilding—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Life includes the full spectrum of human emotions—allow yourself to cry and laugh genuinely. Grief is an essential part of life, but we should also find time to dance. Tears, laughter, sorrow, and moments of joy all support our well-being—nourishing our body, soul, and mind.

The farmer works hard to clear stones from his fields before planting seeds, and sometimes we gather stones in preparation for a building project. In our relationships, there are times to be close, but also times when we keep physical distance—a practice of discipline and self-control.

These two couplets rely on our wisdom and discernment. There is a balance between pursuing something and recognizing when to surrender it and let it go. Carefully choosing which possessions to keep or discard is important. This also applies to our habits, words, and actions. Am I holding on to something that hinders my growth and development?

We face times of separation in life, but chances for reconciliation and reconnecting will come. Scripture reminds us that no one can tame the tongue (James 3:8). It takes wisdom to know when to speak and when to stay quiet.

The last two lines highlight the challenges we face in human relationships. Love reflects God’s image and His design. We struggle with our sinful nature—wanting to control, dominate, and oppress. There is major injustice and plenty of hatred in the world. God’s desire is peace for all mankind.

Remember that the seasons and times are part of God’s sovereign plan. In every situation, event, concern, or incident in the days ahead, God is worthy of our trust. Ask Him to strengthen your faith for “everything ... and every matter under heaven.”

My Servant | Chosen & Beloved

This beloved servant came to fulfill the will of His Heavenly Father. The prophet Isaiah tells us that He was chosen and sent to the earth with a specific mission—an assignment given to Him alone—that only He could accomplish (see Isaiah 42:1-4).

God the Father gave to us His only begotten Son, the Beloved One. The Father is pleased because the Son obeyed and submitted to His Father’s will. He takes great delight in Him, and the Holy Spirit will rest upon the chosen Servant (see Matthew 3:16-17).

My Servant | Gentle & Compassionate

The Servant’s voice will be heard, and His message will be proclaimed. He will not be hostile or violent when He speaks.

The four Gospels offer a glimpse of Jesus’ ministry on earth. He showed compassion to those who were weak, frail, and struggling. Jesus is the perfect example of humility and gentleness. Justice will prevail because of the work He has completed.

My Servant | Hope of the World

All of Israel waited with anticipation for the Chosen One to arrive. Yet, God’s plan was even more extraordinary! This One would be a light and salvation for both the Jews and the Gentiles. His name will bring hope to the entire world.

Jesus is our hope. He is the One we trust and put our confidence in because He came to pay the penalty for our sins. He is our Redeemer, Savior, and King. Even when we face struggles and challenging times, this hope helps us to press on, persevere, and look forward to the future He has promised (see John 14:2-3).

Head to Heart

Take a moment to light a candle, read these prophetic words from Simeon aloud, and meditate on the hope we have in our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

Here are some questions for you to consider and write about.

• How have you experienced the Lord’s salvation over the past year (the gradual process of becoming more like Jesus)?

• Can you remember ways you experienced His light (His guidance and direction)?

• Are there specific ways you can walk more closely with the Lord in the future?

God sent His beloved Son to Earth—Jesus. Commit your heart to the Lord and place your hope in His name. Jesus is our HOPE!

The finish line is just ahead. Give it your all! Somehow, you find your strength and push forward. Use your energy to complete the task. We’ve all been there. Just a little more— a few extra steps. Put your whole heart into it.

This passage shows the Psalmist’s sincere and full dedication to the Lord. To walk in this truth, our hearts pursue a personal relationship with the Lord. Think of searching and hunting because we want to know Him better and walk closer to Him.

When you seek the Lord with your whole heart, your love for Him will grow and deepen. Your actions and attitudes reflect your desire to serve Him faithfully and trust Him fully.

My thoughts drift to a young woman who traveled to Bethlehem with her husband, and they found shelter in a stable. Mary gave birth to God’s Son—fully God, fully man. She looked at the infant wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger, and responded to God.

She provides us with a beautiful example. Mary experienced a challenging yet inspiring journey in recent months—

• A visit from the angel Gabriel announcing the birth of this holy child.

• Her meeting with Elizabeth provided affirmation, support, and a joyful celebration.

• Angels announce the birth of a Savior to some shepherds.

• The shepherds travel to Bethlehem and discover the baby lying in a manger.

Her heart is full and overwhelmed with amazement at God’s work. She gives all her heart and humbly dedicates herself—a bondservant—to the Lord. Mary can relate to the following quote from a poem.

I see a glory in the stable grow.

Lord, with all my heart, I want to see more of Your glory, the work of Your hands, and Your redemptive power. Open my eyes to Your strength through humility, Your loving care, unending patience, grace, and mercy. I seek You with all my heart. Amen.
