Consider Your Ways

Over the years, we have planted several vegetable gardens. Our favorite vegetables to grow were zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes. One summer, our tomatoes kept disappearing just as they were ready to be picked.

We discovered two culprits—the birds and our dog. Each was devouring our delicious tomatoes before we could enjoy them. We had planted, watered, and waited all summer—yet something else was quietly eating our harvest before we could enjoy it.

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways! You have sown much, but harvest little. You eat, yet there is not enough to satisfy; you drink, yet you never have your fill. You put on clothing, yet no one is warm enough. And he who earns wages puts them into a purse with holes.”
- Haggai 1:5-6

The people in Haggai’s day weren’t lazy. They were working — sowing, eating, earning wages, and putting clothes on their backs. On the surface, life looked normal. But beneath all that effort lay a strange emptiness: they sowed much yet harvested little, ate but were never full, and earned wages that vanished before they could spend them. God gives it a name — a purse with holes. Effort goes in, nothing stays.

It’s the same picture as our tomatoes. We hadn’t done anything wrong — we planted, we watered, we waited. But something unseen was quietly consuming the harvest before we could even enjoy it. That’s exactly the emptiness Haggai’s people were living in: a slow, invisible leak, eating away at the very thing they’d worked all season to produce.

The reason wasn’t bad luck. A few verses earlier, God identifies the real issue: the temple remained unfinished while the people were busy finishing their own “paneled houses” (vs. 4). They hadn’t abandoned God outright — they’d quietly moved Him down the priority list, behind their own comfort and agendas.

Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house (the temple) lies desolate?

That’s what makes “consider your ways” such a piercing command. It’s not an accusation. It’s an invitation to pause, look honestly at where our effort is going, and notice the leak. Sometimes the exhaustion we feel isn’t a sign that we need to work harder — it’s a sign that we’ve misplaced our focus.

Head to Heart

“Consider your ways” is God’s gentle yet direct call to self-examination, not to shame. He is a gentle Shepherd, but He calls His sheep to follow Him—stay close, stay safe.

In some seasons, the leak is obvious — a bird on a branch, a dog under the vine, a thief in plain sight. Other times, it’s quieter. We don’t always notice what’s eating away at our harvest until we stop to look. That’s the invitation here: not to assume the worst about ourselves, but to get curious enough to check.

If God said to you today, “Consider your ways,” what would be the first thing He’d point to?

Where in your life do you feel like you are working hard but never getting ahead — where does the “purse” feel like it has holes?

What would it look like in practice to put God first this week — not as an add-on, but as the actual priority behind your time, money, and energy?

Flourish in the Lord’s House

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved trees. There were two apple trees in our backyard, and I loved climbing them. Some days, I would spend hours sitting in one of those trees. My eye is drawn to all kinds of trees. They display beauty in different ways — in their trunks, branches, and leaves. I also enjoy the diversity of trees around the world.

In Psalm 92, the psalmist presents two very different trees — the palm trees and the cedars of Lebanon — to illustrate what a righteous life is like.

But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.

The Two Trees Will Flourish and Grow Strong

First, I must admit that I am fascinated with palm trees (but I digress). Here are some interesting facts about the palm tree and the cedar of Lebanon.

The palm tree bends. It thrives in harsh, dry places and, rather than resisting the wind, it yields to it. It’s resilient because it’s flexible, not because it’s rigid.

“The godly will flourish like palm trees.”

However, the cedar of Lebanon is the opposite — massive, deeply rooted, towering, and renowned throughout the ancient world for its strength and longevity. Solomon built the temple from cedar. Kings prized it. It stood for permanence.

“The godly will … grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.”

The Trees are Planted

Palm and cedar. Flexibility and strength. Both are named here as pictures of flourishing — and they share one thing in common: where they’re planted. Verse 13 tells us plainly: “planted in the house of the Lord.”

When we read that phrase, we may picture a building — a physical temple, a place you must travel to. But that’s not what is described here. “The house of the Lord” describes nearness to God Himself — a life oriented around worship, praise, prayer, and time in His Word. In Psalm 23, David wrote that he would “dwell in the house of the Lord forever” — he didn’t expect to live inside a building. He expected to live in unbroken closeness with God.

Your heart’s desire is to be rooted in the Lord. These elements include:

Offering Him worship, praise, and words of thanks each day (Ps. 95:6).
Bringing your requests and burdens to Him in prayer (Ps. 17:6).
Reading your Bible and meditating on God’s Word (Ps. 1:2).

Flourish in God’s Courts

That’s the key to the whole passage. A tree doesn’t flourish because of what’s happening above ground — the weather, the wind, the season. It flourishes because of what’s happening below ground, out of sight, where the roots draw life from the soil, water, and minerals that remain stationary.

Worship, prayer, and the Word create a rich, nourishing environment. They are available to you anywhere — in your car, in your kitchen, or at your desk — because they are not about location. Each offers believers an opportunity to connect with the Lord and flourish in their personal relationship with Him.

Bear Fruit in Old Age

Verse 14 makes a promise that’s easy to skim over: “they will still bear fruit in old age.” Not just in youth, not just in the vigorous years, but in old age — in seasons that culture tells us are for slowing down and stepping back.

Fresh, green, and still producing. These verses do not hand us a portrait of a withering, dried-up life. Rather, we see a life that remains vibrant because its source of nourishment never runs dry. Your days may look different, but the Lord will provide life and new opportunities to serve Him and love others.

For each of us devoted to God, this promise is worth holding onto — through a career pivot, a new venture, the ordinary weariness of midlife, or any season when you wonder whether you still have something to offer. If you are planted in Him, you are not past your fruitful years. You can flourish and bear fruit.

Head to Heart

Where are you planted?

Take an honest inventory. Is your daily rhythm truly oriented toward worship, prayer, and Scripture — or has it drifted toward busyness, performance, or distraction?
What would it look like to replant yourself more deeply in Him this week?

Consider your flexibility.

In what area of your life do you need to be more like the palm tree — flexible, bending rather than breaking under pressure?
Are you trusting in God’s strength to hold you steady as you flex?

Consider your strength.

In what area do you need to be more like the cedar — deeply rooted, steadfast, and strong for the long haul?
Is there an area where you need the deep roots of cedar — a commitment or calling that requires staying power rather than a quick response?

Reframe “old age.”

Are you believing a lie that your most fruitful season is behind you?
What would it look like to trust God for fruitful days in this season of life?

If you’re in a season of change or feel your most productive years are behind you, let this passage push back against doubt or despair. Fruitfulness isn’t reserved for one season of life. What would it look like to trust God for fruitful days in this season?

My Hiding Place

In the evening, just before dark, our group of neighborhood friends would play the childhood game of “Kick the Can.” One person was designated as “It” and would guard the can while the rest hid throughout the backyard. There was strategy: we would come out of our hiding spots and try to kick the can to be declared the winner.

Psalm 32 was written by David after an extended period of hiding from the Lord because of unconfessed sin in his life. He finally came to the end of himself and turned back to God. David confessed his sin to the Lord and received His forgiveness, experiencing release from the heavy burden of guilt.

Finally, I confessed all my sins to You and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” And You forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Selah.

You are my hiding place

Rather than hiding from God, David proclaims that the Lord is his hiding place. He is invited to come and sit with Him at any time, no matter the circumstances. Now he’s hidden in God—the very presence he once avoided. David says God has become his retreat, even as trouble remains.

You protect me from trouble

David says, “I do not have to face what comes next alone.” Trouble may still be present — the floodwaters mentioned just one verse earlier haven’t receded — yet God’s protection means David is guarded even as trouble remains. Safety isn’t the absence of hardship; it’s God’s presence amid the trouble.

You surround me with songs of victory

David’s heart sings. The psalm, which began in silence and wasted strength (v.3-4), now ends in celebration. He is not merely relieved of guilt — he is encircled by joy, as if every part of his being were filled with praise rather than shame.

Selah
Pause and take a moment to let the weight of this truth settle in your heart before reading the next verse of Scripture.

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.

The Lord says: I will guide you

God says, “I will lead you along the best path.” Not just any path, but the one made specifically for your life. This guidance isn’t generic instruction handed to everyone alike; it is personal direction given to someone who has just confessed his sin and been forgiven. This is God’s personal offer to direct David’s steps.

The Lord says: I will advise you

God says, “I will counsel you continually, as one who knows you.” This isn’t a single piece of advice followed by silence — it’s ongoing, personal counsel from someone who knows you and stays close enough to keep speaking into your life.

The Lord says: I will watch over you

God says, “My eye remains on you.” Not a passing glance, but a steady gaze — the kind of watching that comes from love, not from judgment or suspicion. David is not left to wonder whether God is paying attention; he is told plainly that he is being watched over with care.

Head to Heart

If I’m not careful, I’ll nod my head and start reciting: God hides, protects, guides, and watches. But God wants so much more for us. He invites each of us to rest in Him. Stop working, doing, and managing all the troubles alone. Let today’s trouble be held by the One who has already promised to guide and direct your path.

Knowing the words isn’t the same as embracing them in your soul. The head asks, “What does this verse mean?” The heart’s question is harder: “Do I actually believe this is true for me — right now, today?”

Embrace Truth: Journal Prompts

Do I trust God when trouble arises, or do I still, in some quiet way, hide from Him as David once did?
Have I let my heart sing lately, or have silence and despair replaced the song this verse describes?
Do I believe God is guiding my specific path, or do I believe guidance is real for others but uncertain for me?

Where is the gap right now between what I know about God in this verse and what I feel safe believing? Name it honestly — and bring it to the Lord instead of carrying it silently.

When Jesus Called Your Name

Have you ever attended a parade and wanted to find the best spot to see it? Maybe there was a large crowd, or you were shorter than the people in front of you. If you were a young child, your father may have put you on his shoulders for a better view.

There was a man in Jericho who was small in stature. He’d heard about Jesus’ teaching ministry, and one day, as the crowd gathered in the streets to watch Him pass by, Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree.

And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but because of the crowd he could not, for he was small in stature. So, he ran ahead and climbed into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
- Luke 19:3-4

He was seeking

Luke tells us that this man, Zacchaeus, was a chief tax collector. He was rich (v. 2). News had spread about the teaching, healing, and miracles Jesus performed among the people. Today was the day! Zacchaeus had the chance to see this man as He walked through Jericho—just a glimpse of the religious teacher everyone was talking about.

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.
- Luke 19:5-6

Jesus called his name

Zacchaeus climbed that tree only because he was curious about Jesus. He wasn’t expecting to be seen or noticed. Jesus looked up into the tree and called him by name. He wanted to go to Zacchaeus’ house. We join the crowd and exclaim, “What? Really?”

This man was despised for being a greedy tax collector. He was rich because he had overtaxed the people. Zacchaeus did not feel worthy for Jesus to speak to him, let alone for Jesus to enter his house and dine with him. Zacchaeus was a sinner (v. 7).

Yet when Jesus looked up into the tree, He called Zacchaeus by name. His response makes me smile. Zacchaeus climbed down from the tree and, with a joyful heart, led Jesus and his entourage to his home. Can you picture the bounce in his step and the wide grin on his face?

Zacchaeus changed his behavior

No doubt, the servants in Zacchaeus’ house were in a frenzy, working quickly to prepare a marvelous feast. What did Jesus and Zacchaeus talk about at the dinner table? We can be assured that Jesus wanted Zacchaeus to hear the good news, and He extended mercy, grace, and compassion to him.

And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
- Luke 19:8

Zacchaeus’ response to Jesus was immediate, and it cost him dearly. He didn’t just say, “I’m sorry. I won’t steal money from people anymore.” No, he restored fourfold the money he had stolen and gave half his wealth to the poor. He opened his heart completely because of the mercy shown to him. Zacchaeus changed how he would live for the rest of his life.

Jesus came to seek and to save

As Jesus entered Jericho, he looked up into a sycamore tree. He looked directly at Zacchaeus and began a conversation with him. Jesus was not afraid to get close to him, and he shared a meal with Zacchaeus in his home.

And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
- Luke 19:9-10

On this particular day, Zacchaeus wasn’t a minor character as Jesus passed through Jericho. He was the very person Jesus came to visit.

Head to Heart

Maybe you relate more to Zacchaeus than you’d care to admit. Not the tax collecting — but the tree-climbing. The keeping-your-distance-just-in-case. The wondering whether you’d even be welcome if Jesus really knew what your life looked like up close.

Jesus didn’t wait for Zacchaeus to come down and clean up first. He called him by name while Zacchaeus was still up in the branches, still hiding in plain sight.

Jesus saw him.

Jesus knew his name.

Jesus wanted to spend time with him.

That’s who Jesus is with you too. He looks up into the very tree you climbed to hide in and says, “I see you. Come down. I’m coming to your house today.”

Journal Prompts:

Where in your life have you been watching Jesus from a distance — curious, wondering — yet not really believing He’d stop and notice you?
What might change in your heart if you believed He already had called your name?

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You don’t wait for me to come down before You call my name. Help me receive Your welcome today — not as something I’ve earned, but as the gift it has always been. Let that welcome change me as it changed Zacchaeus. Amen.

When the Waters Rise

One summer, our small town was struck by a devastating flood. My dad worked day and night to keep water from flooding into the basement of the family store, while I stayed home, doing everything I could to protect our house from the rising waters. The damage remained visible long after, and it took our community months to rebuild and recover.

Over the years, this verse from Isaiah has brought my heart comfort and peace. Take a few moments to read and meditate on God’s promise.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
— Isaiah 43:2

This verse doesn’t say you won’t pass through waters. It doesn’t say the fire won’t come near you. God isn’t promising a life without storms. He’s promising something quieter and, in some ways, harder for us to hold onto: I will be with you in it.

This promise is evident throughout Scripture. God didn’t keep Israel from the Red Sea — He walked them through the middle of it (Exodus 14). He didn’t keep Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego out of the furnace — He showed up in the furnace with them (Daniel 3:25). David walked through the dark valley and acknowledged, “You are with me” (Psalm 23:4).

What are you carrying today, as if you’re facing it alone? It may not be a literal flood. Perhaps it’s a medical diagnosis, a broken relationship, or financial fears that keep you up at night.

Isaiah’s words do not promise you will avoid the flood or the fire. They reframe God’s promise. You are asking Him to walk through it with you, trusting that you are not alone and will not be consumed.

God will not abandon you. His presence in the storm is enough!

Head to Heart

Identify one specific situation right now in which you’ve been praying for escape rather than for God’s presence. Bring this request to the Lord today.

Instead of asking “when will this end,” ask God to reveal where He is already present in the situation. Look for one sign of His presence — such as provision, a person, or unexpected peace.

Our faith grows stronger when we stand still and continue to trust Him amid the storm, trial, or difficult circumstance.

For I am the Lord your God... you are precious in My eyes, and honored, and I love you
— Isaiah 43:3-4

You Alone Are the LORD

A few years ago, we visited friends at their beach house. Each evening, we sat on the balcony to watch the sunset, and we weren’t alone—many others gathered along the shore, drawn by the sun’s splendor as it dipped below the western horizon.

No one had to call them there. No one had to convince them it was worth watching. The sky simply proclaimed its glory, and people came.

That’s what sunrises and sunsets do every day, whether we notice or not—they remind us of God’s glory and majesty. Long before anyone gathered on a beach to watch one, the people of Israel gathered to declare the source of that glory.

“You are the LORD, You alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and You preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships You.”
- Nehemiah 9:6

This verse presents us with two simple yet staggering truths about God and calls us to an active response.

“You Alone” — The Lord Is the Creator

“You are the LORD, You alone. You have made heaven... the earth... the seas.” There is no co-creator, no rival, no committee. The Lord alone spoke the universe into being, and He alone sustains its beauty.

Every sunrise, every sunset, every star in the night sky is a fresh display of the majesty that belongs to Him alone. We don’t gather on a beach to watch the work of many gods—we watch the unrivaled glory of the one true God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.
- John 1:1-3

“You Preserve” — The Lord Sustains All Things

But Nehemiah doesn’t stop at creation. He adds, “You preserve all of them.” The Lord didn’t simply create the world and step back. He holds it together, moment by moment and day by day.

The same hands that made the heavens are the same hands keeping them in place right now—and keeping you in place right now. Creation is a display of His power; preservation is a display of His faithfulness.

See how I love Your precepts; preserve my life, Lord, in accordance with Your faithful love.
- Psalm 119:159

Call to Worship

Put those two truths together—He alone made it, and He alone keeps it—and only one response makes sense: “the host of heaven worships You.”

Worship isn’t an obligation we add on top of these truths; it’s the only fitting response to them. If God alone created and God alone sustains, then God alone deserves our praise.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.
- Psalm 29:2

So, the next time you watch a sunset, let it do what it was made to do: turn your eyes—and your worship—toward the One who is LORD, and LORD alone.

Head to Heart

Take a moment today to notice something God made—a sunrise, a tree, the sound of rain, the face of someone you love. Instead of just observing it, pause and say out loud, “Lord, You alone made this, and You alone are holding it together.” Let that small act of noticing become an act of worship.

Then ask yourself: Is there an area of my life where I’m acting as if the preserving is up to me? A worry I’m carrying, an outcome I’m trying to control, or a burden I think depends entirely on my own strength? Name it specifically. Then hand it back to the One who preserves all things—not just galaxies and seas. His faithful love holds you!

Worship is the right response to who God is. What’s one way you can worship Him today—not in a worship service, but in an ordinary moment?

Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth.

Full of Good Works

I want to tell you about one of my favorite women in the entire Bible, though I have many favorites. Her story appears in seven short verses in the book of Acts. Luke tells us everything we need to know about the kind of woman she was. Her name was Tabitha. It would be so nice to sit down with a cup of coffee and hear more about her life.

She wasn’t a prophet or a queen. She didn’t deliver a famous sermon or lead an army. She was a “disciple” who made things with her hands and loved the people around her with everything she had.

In Joppa, there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor.

A Disciple

If we read too quickly, we will miss this important descriptive word about Tabitha—disciple. Luke wants us to know she was a true follower of Jesus. This woman lived during Christ’s earthly ministry. I wonder whether she ever met Jesus, heard His teaching, or witnessed the miracles He performed.

Always Doing Good and Helping the Poor

We know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the true message of the Gospel completely changed her life! Luke tells us she was “always doing good and helping the poor.” Not occasionally. Not when it was convenient. ALWAYS. It was simply who she was.

In the first century, widows were among the most vulnerable members of society—often without income, status, or anyone to care for them. Tabitha saw these women. She knew their names. She sat down with needle and thread to ensure they were clothed and cared for. She gave of her time and talent to show kindness and care.

Then Tabitha became ill and died. The community of believers in Joppa was devastated. They heard that Peter was nearby in Lydda, so they sent two men with an urgent message, asking him to please come quickly to Joppa.

Peter went with them, and when he arrived, he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Tabitha had made while she was still with them.
- Acts 9:39

The widows were not talking about Tabitha but were instead showing Peter the robes and clothing she had made for them. Each piece of clothing was evidence of her love and care. These women had nothing to offer as a tribute to Tabitha except the garments on their backs, the very work of her hands.

Peter sent everyone out of the room, knelt, and prayed. Then he said simply, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes — and was alive. Peter called the believers and the widows back in and presented her to them. We’re told that “this became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord” (Acts 9:42).

Here’s what strikes me most about Tabitha: her legacy wasn’t stored in a building or written in a book. It was worn. It walked around town on the backs of women forgotten by everyone else. You could see it. You could touch it. Her love had texture and weight.

She also reminds us that our ordinary gifts matter. She didn’t perform miracles or write Scripture. She sewed. God used that to knit together a community so tightly that her absence nearly unraveled it — and her return led an entire city to believe the message of the Gospel.

Head to Heart

Maybe you have wondered whether what you do really matters. You show up, you serve, you give, you care—and it feels small and insignificant. It feels as if nobody’s keeping track.

The meals you cook for grieving families. The notes you write that someone reads a hundred times. The way you remember names and ask follow-up questions. The practical help you offer when others offer only thoughts and prayers. The garments you make, literally or figuratively, for the people in your life who need to be seen and covered most.

And here’s the thing — you don’t have to be extraordinary to live like Tabitha. You just have to pay attention to the widow in your neighborhood, to the young mom who is drowning, and to the woman at church who always sits alone. Tabitha’s whole life seemed to be built on one simple practice: noticing people who were easy to overlook and doing something about it.

Ask the Lord to show you one act of kindness you could offer someone today. Maybe it’s a phone call to ask how they are doing, then really listen to their answer. Perhaps you could write an encouraging note and mail it. It might be a meal, cookies, or a bouquet of flowers.

Be creative and do what you can. It doesn’t need to be extravagant. Keep it practical and simple. The Lord sees, and He will be pleased with the care you show others.

Come to the Well

Have you ever wanted to avoid people, withdraw, and hide? Maybe you were having a hard day, felt ashamed or embarrassed, or simply didn’t want to talk to others. What if your reason for hiding from others stemmed from mistreatment, gossip, or unkind words that have assaulted your senses for years? At all costs, you would do anything to avoid interacting with others!

It was noon when this woman came to the well — the hottest, loneliest hour of the day. She wasn’t there by accident. She chose that hour deliberately, slipping out after the other women of Sychar had already come and gone in the morning, avoiding their glances and whispers. She carried more than an empty water jar. She carried the weight of a complicated past, loneliness, and a broken heart.

And into that ordinary, shame-filled errand, Jesus—a Jewish man, a respected rabbi—waited at the well.

He didn’t demand that she clean herself up. He didn’t send her away or make her earn even a moment of His time. He simply asked for a drink of water — and in doing so, He crossed every boundary the world had drawn around her, including those of gender, ethnicity, and moral reputation. He saw her fully and completely, and He stayed.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”
- John 4:7

Can you imagine the confusion in her eyes? Why is this Jewish man speaking to a Samaritan—and a woman? Unheard of in the culture of the day!

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Can you envision the compassion and care in Jesus’ eyes? He knew everything about her—her past failures, her sin, her abuse, her marriage, and her divorce. But He did not back away; instead, He invited her into a meaningful conversation.

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
- John 4:10

Jesus pointed to her ordinary chores—filling a water jar at the well—and revealed her heart’s deepest longing. He shifted the conversation from what she lacked to what He could give. He redirected her from shame to longing—beneath the busyness of her survival, there was an unquenched thirst. He offered her “living water.”

Then Jesus gently named her situation — “You have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband” (see John 4:18). Something remarkable happened. She didn’t run. She didn’t shut down. She engaged. She recognized she stood in the presence of someone extraordinary and began asking the deep questions she’d perhaps never had the space to ask.

The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things.”
- John 4:25

And Jesus gave her one of the most profound declarations in all of Scripture: “I, the One speaking to you — I am He” (see John 4:26). He revealed Himself to her — a marginalized, sinful Samaritan woman at a well in the middle of the day — as the long-awaited Messiah. She was the first to whom He revealed His messianic identity. Not to the religious elite. Not in the temple courts. Rather, He shared this truth with a lonely, heartbroken woman.

Head to Heart

My friend, perhaps you know what it’s like to carry something heavy to the well. Maybe it’s a past you’re not proud of, a loneliness you can’t shake, a relationship that left you emptier than before, or simply a deep ache you can’t name. You may quietly avoid the crowds or slip out into public when no one will see or recognize you.

Jesus will meet you at the well. He knows your whole story, every chapter. He sees you, and there is no condemnation in His eyes. He has not prepared a written list of everything you have done wrong. His eyes are filled with deep love, care, and compassion. His heart is a bottomless well of mercy and grace.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does He remove our transgressions from us.
As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him.
- Psalm 103:11-13

He is the source of living water. The living water He offers doesn’t just quench thirst — it becomes a spring within you, welling up and overflowing into a hurting, needy world.

Journal Questions

The woman came to the well at noon — alone. Are there areas of your life where you have been ‘going to the well alone,’ hiding from others, or carrying burdens in isolation? What has kept you from community? Jesus knows. Tell Him.

Jesus crossed social and cultural barriers to speak with this woman. How does knowing that Jesus actively sought her out — and seeks you out too — change the way you think about your own worth?

I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued My faithfulness to you.

God’s Hand of Blessing

As I sit here this morning, I find myself longing for a time of quiet reflection. The Holy Spirit invites each of us to spend time meditating on Scripture and listening for His still, small voice. Where do you go when you want to ponder, pray, and think deeply? Perhaps it’s a quiet corner in your house, a little coffee shop, or a special place outdoors. Wherever that place is, bring these words with you today.

O Lord, You have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and come behind me. You place Your hand of blessing on my head.

GOD EXAMINES YOUR HEART: God’s Complete Knowledge

He knows everything about you
When you sit down or stand up
He knows your thoughts, even from afar

This is not scrutiny — it is intimacy. God examines your heart not to find fault, but because He is deeply and personally acquainted with you.

GOD SEES YOU: God’s Watchful Presence

When you travel
When you rest at home
Every word before you speak it

No moment is hidden from Him — not the mundane, not the difficult. In every transition and every stillness, He sees you and is present with you.

GOD GOES BEFORE YOU: Divine Protection

He guides your steps
He follows behind you
He knows the path you walk

“You go before me and follow me.” God is not surprised by what lies ahead of you. He has already been there, and He guards the road behind you, too.

GOD’S HAND OF BLESSING: Divine Comfort

His hand rests on your head
He will lead and direct you
You do not need to fear or doubt

“You place Your hand of blessing on my head.” This is not a distant deity observing from afar. This is a Father who tenderly places His hand on you, covering you with His favor and peace.

Where is your quiet place — and when did you last use it truly?

What worries are you carrying today that you can release to the One who already knows?

How does it change your day to remember that He goes before you in every moment?

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!

Rejoice!

This eighteen-year-old memory is still very clear in my mind. I was directing an event in Chicago, IL, when I received a phone call. The baby will be here soon. Oh, my goodness! By the time I arrived at the hospital, little Miss Riley Elizabeth had already been born. We were thrilled to welcome a little girl into our family!

Over the years, we have watched her grow and have celebrated many happy occasions with her. We have shared books, snuggles, laughter, games, and movies. We are grateful for every moment we have spent together. Riley has brought so much joy to our lives, and we thank the Lord for her life!

Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, rejoice.

Today we celebrate! We rejoice with Riley and applaud her many high school accomplishments. Congratulations to our fine young granddaughter!

On another note, I’m reminded that I tend to focus on major celebrations and overlook the daily joys and pleasures. God’s blessings and good gifts come in many forms. Yet we often rush through our days, missing the moments of celebration. Here are some of my favorites:

A beautiful sunrise or sunset
Listening to the birds sing in the early morning
A summer rainstorm
Children laughing and playing games

Paul continues in his letter to the Philippians with these stirring thoughts. Consider what is excellent and praiseworthy. Fill your mind with what is true and honorable. Ask yourself: Is this honest, respectable, trustworthy, and ethical?

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
- Philippians 4:8

We should choose to fill our minds with thoughts that are virtuous, upright, and wholesome. Think about the things that bring wonder and delight to your soul. Search your heart and ask: Is this a pleasant gift from the Lord’s hand?

There are many wonderful milestones to celebrate in life. Take time to rejoice each day. We need to be mindful of the daily blessings and gifts from God’s hand. He delights in His children and gives generously.

In the Storm

A few years ago, I was traveling with a group in Israel. We arrived at the Sea of Galilee, checked into our resort, and gathered for dinner when a fierce storm swept across the region. The power went out, and we sat in the dark for hours as winds and rain pounded the rooftops, windows, and the shoreline.

The next morning, we were amazed by the damage—fallen trees, scattered debris, and missing rooftops. Yet the blue sky and crisp morning air offered no memory of the raging storm from the night before. The lake was peaceful, calm, and still. We boarded a boat and sailed across the tranquil waters of the Sea of Galilee. This is the same lake where Jesus and His disciples were caught in a fierce storm. The Sea of Galilee offered each of us a memorable lesson.

On that day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took Him with them in the boat, just as He was. And other boats were with Him.
- Mark 4:35-36

And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
- Mark 4:37

Fierce storms can arise quickly on the Sea of Galilee. Even experienced fishermen know how dangerous, rough, and life-threatening the wind and waves can be. The disciples were gripped by fear and panic, crying out to Jesus.

But He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
- Mark 4:38

Can you hear the fear and panic in their question? “Don’t You care that we are all going to drown?” They were likely angry that Jesus was asleep in the boat’s stern. The text even says His head rested on a pillow. (That’s an interesting detail the Gospel writer included.) Jesus was fast asleep as the winds howled and the boat filled with water.

And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
- Mark 4:39-41

Jesus rebuked the wind and commanded the waves to be still. Peace! Calm! Then Jesus addressed the disciples directly. “Why are your hearts filled with fear? Even after all the time we have spent together, your faith is lacking.” Adrenaline still rushed through their veins, and their eyes were wide with fear.

The disciples still had much to learn about Jesus. Their fearful hearts posed bold questions. Who is this man? Is it possible that the wind and the sea obey His voice?

That morning, our group witnessed a calm sea—no wind or raging waves. But the night before, we had endured a violent storm.

We all know life is full of storms. You may be in a storm of your own—not on the Sea of Galilee, but in your life, your family, or your personal faith. Your words may echo the disciples’ question, “Don’t you care that I might perish?”

Friends, our faith is weak, and it’s hard to believe and trust when we’re in the middle of the storm. Receive these words of encouragement today. He hears your cries and sees every tear. Remember, the wind and the sea obey Him!

Wait in Silence

Was it challenging to sit still and be quiet as a child? Perhaps you were told, “Be quiet,” at school, a show, concert, or at church. Then you were sternly reminded, “No talking!” Maybe a firm hand squeezed your knee or shoulder to emphasize the need for silence.

I must admit I’m not great at sitting still or waiting quietly. I prefer to keep my hands and feet moving or to stay busy with a particular assignment. However, the Lord desires us to take time to quiet our hearts and minds before Him.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
- Psalm 62:5-6 (ESV)

For God Alone, O My Soul

Where do we turn when our souls are reeling with anxiety, worry, discouragement, or fear? We are tempted to seek other ways to comfort or soothe ourselves—food, work harder, or alcohol. This verse reminds us to look to the Lord. Alone.

Wait in Silence

Yes, look to the Lord and wait. How difficult can it be to sit in silence? Set a timer for 5 minutes, sit in a chair and be quiet. Open your Bible to Psalm 62 and read the first eight verses. Do not speak out loud. Be still and wait.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.
- Psalm 37:7

My Hope is From Him

Without the Lord, we would be devoid of hope. There will be days when our hope feels weak and diminished. Turn to the Word of God and speak His Truth and promises out loud.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word, I hope.
- Psalm 130:5

My Rock, My Salvation, My Fortress

Many days, I pray these metaphors of God back to Him. We can cling to His promises that He is our firm and steady rock. Our salvation comes from God alone. We can run into His mighty fortress and find security. We can trust Him to provide all that we need today.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
- Psalm 18:2

I Shall Not Be Shaken

David waited before the Lord, trusting in His complete sufficiency. He embraced these words, and his faith was strengthened. Our faith and hope in the Lord provide the answers to our anxiety and despair. Wait in silence and rest in Him.

I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
- Psalm 16:8

Head to Heart

Today’s Bible verses focus on waiting quietly for the Lord to act or move in our current situation. This message encourages us to slow down and reflect on the truths found in God’s Word. Take time to read each Bible verse again.

Last week, I shared with you the practice of Breath Prayers. Breath prayers are short prayers recited in sync with your inhaling and exhaling. They allow us to meditate on God’s Word and pray anywhere, at any time, while connecting with God.

Below are three examples to use during your quiet time with the Lord.

Inhale breath: For God alone, wait in silence

Exhale breath: My hope is from Him

Inhale breath: He is my rock and fortress

Exhale breath: I will not be shaken

Inhale breath: Be still before the Lord

Exhale breath: Wait patiently for Him

The Midnight Ride

We plan to attend two weddings this summer. What makes each wedding unique for us? We were privileged to guide each couple through premarital counseling. We have used the Prepare/Enrich survey for over 25 years, and its results have been so helpful in guiding couples to identify their strengths and areas for growth.

One important category we discuss is wedding planning. It is very stressful to think through all the planning, organization, and details. It requires vision, oversight, and execution. It is necessary to see the big picture and then determine how to move forward with bringing the event or project to fruition.

Over the past few months, I have focused on the book of Nehemiah during my quiet time. Nehemiah was a gifted man, obedient to the Lord’s call on his life. I have noted the following qualities in Nehemiah’s life:

Worshiper of the One True God of Israel
Man of Prayer
Servant of God

Nehemiah was a visionary with strong administrative skills. The Lord had gifted him and called him to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Yet Nehemiah did not undertake this monumental task alone; he turned to the Lord in fervent prayer and days of fasting. (See Nehemiah 1:4). Nehemiah recognized that unless the Lord directed his steps, the mission would fail.

So, I went to Jerusalem and was there three days. Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no animal with me but the one on which I rode.
- Nehemiah 2:11-12

After the long journey from Susa to Jerusalem, Nehemiah rested for three days. He then planned a midnight site visit and selected a small group of trusted men to accompany him. Only Nehemiah rode a donkey as the men set out to carefully inspect Jerusalem’s fallen walls.

Nehemiah provides these details, but I love the sentence that appears in the middle of verses 11 and 12. “I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem.” This was not happenstance.

Nehemiah knew he was in Jerusalem to complete God’s special assignment. The Lord chose Nehemiah, a gifted administrator, to oversee and direct this important project. The role was high-pressure and required long hours each day. It would be necessary to balance careful planning and organization with informational meetings for leaders, encouraging words for workers, and site visits to assess progress.

You may already sense the Lord’s leading toward a new assignment or a specific ministry opportunity. Or you may have a heart’s desire to serve in a different role or capacity. Perhaps you are waiting for the door to open. Here are some thoughts to guide you as you wait for the Lord’s guidance and direction.

Head to Heart

First question: Have you ever wondered what your spiritual gifts are? When a person receives Jesus as their personal Savior, the Holy Spirit indwells them, and God sovereignly and graciously endows the new believer with spiritual gifts.

Additional questions: What meaningful activities bring you great joy, a sense of purpose, and fulfillment? Do you regularly engage in activities that align with your heart’s passion?

The Lord wants to bring together our spiritual gifts, abilities, and passions so that we can serve others and bring Him glory.

Would you consider spending time in prayer each day over the next 1-2 weeks, asking the Lord to clarify your gifts, abilities, and heart’s passion? You may want to follow Nehemiah’s example by going for a walk as you voice your desire to follow the Lord’s leading.

Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all day.

A Daily Walk

In the early years of our marriage, one of our Bible professors shared some wise advice with us. Take a walk together in the evening and pray. Walks provide a valuable opportunity to connect with another person and the Almighty One who created it all.

Feel the breeze blowing. Inhale the beauty of flowers, grass, and trees. Smile as birds, squirrels, and rabbits scamper across the path ahead. Tilt your head back and look up at the sky. Observe the cloud formation, sun, moon, and stars. Take time to appreciate the beauty in this world.

When I go for a walk, I take time to pray for other people and situations in my life. The Lord reminds me of friends’ names and details in their lives. I like to pray out loud. Sometimes, I even start singing a hymn or worship song.

This well-known hymn is one of my favorites:

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

As for us, we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.
-Micah 4:5

Walking is an excellent activity for both our physical and emotional well-being. Moreover, it can allow us to bond with someone like our spouse, child, or friend. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of walking with many friends in various states. We have shared stories of life, much laughter, and even sadness during our walks. We also share Bible verses and pray together.

A daily walk with God strengthens my spiritual life. It’s all about my relationship with Jesus and my need to spend time every day with Him — in the Bible, in prayer, waiting before Him in silence. Fellowship results when I purposefully walk with God every day. He is my Savior, Friend, and Lord. I want to know Him better and walk close to Him.

Head to Heart

Walking has many benefits for physical, emotional, and mental health. It can also serve as a reminder to cultivate a deeper spiritual relationship with God.

Recording our thoughts in a journal each evening is a helpful practice. This exercise allows us to reflect on the day, practice gratitude, and slow down before sleep.

I encourage you to take a few moments and jot down two or three observations from your daily walk. Keep your entry simple so it can easily fit into your daily routine. Then, write a sentence of gratitude to the Lord for the beauty of His creation and the gift of this day.

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
- Deuteronomy 10:12

Learn the Secret

Backpacking, hiking, and camping—what do those words conjure for you? Maybe you picture the glorious outdoors—beautiful scenery, sunshine, trees, and starry skies at night. But other memories may flood your mind—stormy weather, failed campfires, and sleepless nights on rocky ground.

In the past, we’ve had camping trips with excellent meals, hiking, canoeing, and late-night campfire conversations. Other outings were less enjoyable—rainy days, wet clothes, burned pancakes, and sleepless nights.

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
- Philippians 4:12 (NIV)

The apostle Paul did a lot of “camping” during his ministry. There were days when his mission team walked many miles and had very little to eat. We know he faced struggles and hardships—times of scarcity and hunger. Paul chose to trust God in every situation he faced. It was a daily decision.

I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
- 2 Corinthians 11:27

In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul tells them he has learned the secret of living in every situation. He declares, “I have enough. I am content.” Paul learned the secret and practiced contentment.

Learning does not just happen. We must pursue and consistently practice expressing our thankfulness. Paul calls us to live daily, in every circumstance, with a spirit of contentment.

Enjoy God’s gifts of abundance because He delights in blessing His children. In times of need, recognize that His provision will be sufficient and His strength will be available in every situation you face.

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
- Philippians 4:13

Relying on our own strength will accomplish little. Paul’s life exemplified godly humility, recognizing that Jesus Christ was the source of his strength.

Head to Heart

Pursue the secret of contentment.

Paul said, “I know what it is to …”
- Gratitude will transform your heart and thoughts. Gratitude makes what we have sufficient, forming the foundation for peace.
- A simple gratitude list is helpful because it directs our attention to the good gifts in our lives.

Jesus Christ is your source of strength.

Paul said, “I can do everything through Christ.”
- Acknowledge your need, and ask God to give you the strength to complete the work He has called you to do.
- Strive to focus on God in every circumstance.

I can live humbly in challenging times and enjoy abundance during prosperous times.

It’s not about having NOTHING. It’s about having ENOUGH.

God’s Gracious Hand

Jerry was a man of integrity and a quiet leader. He faithfully studied God’s Word and was a prayer warrior. Jerry was a powerful example to me. Perhaps you remember someone like this in your life. What specific qualities did you admire in them?

In the Old Testament, the book of Nehemiah presents an extraordinary man. We know he was not perfect (see Nehemiah 1:6), yet he was a devoted worshiper of the One True God. He recognized the Lord as the great and awesome God (Nehemiah 1:5; Psalm 70:4). He trusted in God’s truthfulness and relied on His covenant-keeping love for those who walk in His ways. This man humbled himself before the Almighty God of heaven!

Nehemiah faithfully served the king in a foreign land. He adhered to the royal court’s regulations and remained loyal to the regime. He was trusted to hold the king’s confidence in private conversations, political discussions, and government decisions.

In the late autumn, Nehemiah received troubling news from his brother. I shared this in an earlier blog post. He sat down and wept, and for days he mourned for the people of Jerusalem. He fasted and prayed to the God of heaven.

A few months passed, and in early spring Nehemiah was serving King Artaxerxes his wine. It was not acceptable to show sadness in the king’s presence. However, the king recognized that his faithful cupbearer was deeply troubled and asked, “Why are you looking so sad?”

Then I was terrified, but I replied, “Long live the king! How can I not be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”
The king asked, “Well, how can I help you?”

With a prayer to the God of heaven, I replied, “If it please the king, and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.”
- Nehemiah 2:4b-5

Nehemiah had prayed for weeks and months. He had asked the Lord to restore the gates and walls of Jerusalem. Now the king asked him, “How can I help?” The Lord opened a door for Nehemiah to speak, but he knew he must speak respectfully. Nehemiah prayed silently to the God of heaven before he spoke.

The king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked, “How long will you be gone? When will you return?” After I told him how long I would be gone, the king agreed to my request.

Nehemiah was a gifted administrator. In his conversation with the king, he outlined key elements of his plan. He recognized that his envoy would need the king’s permission to travel safely from Susa to Judah. Nehemiah requested a letter to Asaph, asking for timber from the king’s forest. Nehemiah had spent many hours in prayer, and God had guided his thoughts toward restoring the gates and city walls.

I also said to the king, “If it please the king, let me have letters addressed to the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River, instructing them to let me travel safely through their territories on my way to Judah. And please give me a letter addressed to Asaph, the manager of the king’s forest, instructing him to give me timber. I will need it to make beams for the gates of the Temple fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself.”

Nehemiah recognized the importance of the work and believed God was calling him to lead his people in completing this major reconstruction project. I can only imagine the thoughts, plans, and ideas racing through his mind. He would need to seek the Lord’s guidance and apply sound strategy and wise management skills.

And the king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me.

Even as the king granted Nehemiah permission to travel to Jerusalem to oversee the rebuilding of the city’s gates and walls, Nehemiah offered praise to God. Nehemiah believed the Lord had called him to this work and credited God with the king’s favorable response to his requests.

Head to Heart

Do you recall a specific time when you felt God’s gracious hand upon you? Take a moment to reflect on the details of that experience. How did He provide for and care for you? What was your response to the Lord?

Prayer can feel difficult at times because of fatigue, distractions, guilt, or a sense of distance from God. Yet prayer is about presence rather than performance. You can speak simply, honestly, and briefly, for example, by saying “Help me.” When words fail, it helps to pray verses from Scripture (such as the Psalms) or the Lord’s Prayer.

Keep it Simple: Prayer is simply talking to God. If you can only say, “Father, I’m here,” that is enough.

Pray Scripture: Use the Psalms to express your feelings when you cannot find your own words.

Rely on the Holy Spirit: Remember that the Spirit intercedes for you, especially when you feel you can’t pray.

Lean on Community: Ask a trusted friend or mentor to pray for you or with you.

Focus on God’s Character: Remind yourself of God’s love and care rather than dwelling on fear, guilt, shame, discouragement, or inadequacy.

Come to the Garden

My mother enrolled me in piano lessons in kindergarten. My first teacher was Mrs. Hilfiger, and after a few years, I began taking lessons from Mrs. Ellenberger. She taught me to sight-read music and encouraged me to play every song in the hymn book. I would play and sing in the evenings, and one of my favorites was “In the Garden.”

The hymn’s author, C. Austin Miles, had just read John 20 and was moved by the garden meeting between the resurrected Jesus and His faithful follower, Mary Magdalene. As Miles reflected on this beautiful scene, he was drawn to consider his personal relationship with Jesus and the opportunity to meet Him in a garden.

Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you crying? For Whom are you looking?” Supposing that it was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you carried Him away from here, tell me where you have put Him and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” – which means Teacher or Master.
- John 20:15-16

Mary’s heart was heavy with grief. She had witnessed Jesus’s crucifixion. After the soldiers confirmed His death, she watched Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus carry His body to the nearby garden tomb. Mary sat across from the tomb, watching them wrap the body and lay it on the cold stone ledge.

Early on the third morning, she returned to the garden and found an empty tomb. Her eyes brimming with tears, she asked, “Sir … tell me where you have put Him.”

Can you imagine hearing the resurrected Jesus speak your name? My friend, He knows your name. Too often, we hurry about, make noise, and get caught up in the world’s distractions, and as a result, we miss His still, small voice.

Bible reading, prayer, and seeking God’s guidance are essential to spiritual growth and well-being. We must also cultivate quiet and silence in our personal time with the Lord. A wise and godly mentor once told me that discerning the Lord’s voice takes time. She encouraged me to be still and wait patiently.

The words of this hymn often draw me into a peaceful time with Jesus, serving as a gentle reminder – “and the joy that we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”

In the Garden

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses

He walks with me, and He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy that we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet that the birds hush their singing
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing

Head to Heart

What would it be like to meet your Lord and Savior—face-to-face—in a lovely garden? To hear Him speak your name. How would you respond—fall to your knees in worship or begin to speak words of adoration and praise for Him?

Perhaps you have a favorite place to sit—peaceful, calm, and quiet. I encourage you to go to this spot and spend time with the Lord today. You might begin by reading a passage of Scripture, then sit quietly. Remember, the Lord teaches us and gently guides our steps when we sit with Him—quiet, patient, and still.

Prepare A Place

Where do you live? I’m sure you’ve been asked this question many times over the years. You may have lived in the same house for a long time, or you might have moved several times. We have friends who have lived in many different places through the years.

You may have felt uncertain about where you would live while attending college or relocating for a new job. These situations can make us feel very troubled and unsure.

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
- John 14:1-2

Jesus was speaking with His closest disciples. He knew tough times were ahead for them. His goal was to give courage and strength to their hearts and minds. He wants us to let go of the fear in our hearts and believe in the Heavenly Father and in Him.

Jesus assures us that there are many rooms in the Father’s house. He has gone to prepare a place for everyone who chooses to believe in God and the redemption offered through the shed blood of Jesus.

What do you imagine the rooms will look like in the Father’s house? I had several specific reasons for choosing the room pictured here. These simple elements evoke peace and calm in my heart.

The windows let in light and offer a view to the outside.
The walls are white, representing purity and cleanliness.
The candle and guitar set the scene for praise and worship.
The wood stove provides warmth and a welcoming atmosphere.
The couch offers plenty of space for friends in Jesus to gather — an ideal spot to praise, worship, and magnify the precious name of Jesus.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.
- John 14:3-4

Jesus spoke to them honestly and sincerely. He wanted His followers to trust in His return. Jesus promised them an abundant life and an eternal home with Him. We will spend eternity with Jesus!

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
- John 14:5

However, we often feel anxious, doubt, worry, or fret. Thomas’ words may address some of the concerns you have raised. Most of us can relate to his question. I’m so grateful that Jesus welcomes our questions and does not push us away. His answer provides clear instructions.

Jesus said to him, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
- John 14:6

These are Jesus’ kind words of invitation. No one is left out. Come to Jesus. When we follow Him, we find peace and joy. He invites us to spend eternity with Him in the Father’s house. Jesus is preparing a room for you.

Head to Heart

What do you imagine your heavenly room will look like in the Father’s house? We can dream and imagine the room that Jesus has gone to prepare for us. Are there some items you would ask Him to include?

Consider these aspects of our worship to the Lord.

Who will we worship? Why will we worship Him?

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
- Revelation 5:12

How will we worship?

I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
- Psalm 69:30

How long will we worship?

I will extol You, my God and King, and bless Your name forever and ever.
- Psalm 145:1

The King’s Cupbearer

Have you ever had sleepless nights or suddenly awakened and fallen to your knees in prayer before the Lord? Perhaps the situation was so overwhelming that you felt compelled to turn straight to God in sincere prayer. As serious as this may sound, there is no better or wiser place for you and me to seek help.

The book of Nehemiah is part of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and is combined with the book of Ezra. These two books provide details about rebuilding Jerusalem and its walls after the Babylonian conquest of Judah and the destruction of the city.

In those days, I was the king’s cupbearer.
- Nehemiah 1:11b

The Hebrew title for the cupbearer was mashqeh, meaning “one who gives to drink.” Not only did he taste the king’s wine to prevent poisoning, but he likely also served as a royal advisor to King Artaxerxes. He was in the presence of King Artaxerxes every day. Nehemiah was a highly trusted member of the Persian royal court.

Position, power, and privilege can cloud human judgment. This may have been true for Nehemiah, but he did not succumb to these temptation traps.

Nehemiah was a remarkable man of God. This book highlights the qualities of someone who trusted in the Lord and consistently sought His guidance and counsel.

First, he was a faithful servant. Nehemiah was loyal and served the king in a foreign land. He followed the rules and regulations of the royal court. He was trusted to keep the king’s confidence in private conversations, political discussions, and government decisions.

One day, Nehemiah’s brother Hanani arrived at the fortress in Susa from Judah. Nehemiah greeted him and inquired about the Jews in Jerusalem. His brother delivered a troubling report.

“Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”
- Nehemiah 1:3

The cupbearer was heartbroken and overwhelmed with sorrow! How could this be? Nehemiah wept, mourned for his people and Jerusalem, and he fasted and prayed.

“O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps His covenant of unfailing love with those who love Him and obey His commands, listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for Your people, Israel. I confess that we have sinned against You. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned!
- Nehemiah 1:5-6

Though he received disturbing news, Nehemiah took his sorrow to the Lord. He poured out his heart to the Lord.

Nehemiah was a devoted worshiper of the One True God. He recognizes the Lord as the great and awesome God. He trusts in God’s truthfulness and relies on His covenant keeping love for those who walk in His ways. Nehemiah confesses the sins of Israel, including his own family and himself. This man humbles himself before the Almighty God of heaven!

“O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me.”
- Nehemiah 1:11a

Nehemiah offers a helpful and encouraging example of prayer for us.

Head to Heart

I’m reminded of the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” which encourages believers to bring every burden, care, and weakness to the Lord in prayer.

Take time to reflect on the words of this hymn and fill in the blanks for the following phrases.

Jesus is my faithful friend …

I can bring all my sins to Him.
I can bring my grief and sorrow to Him.

What peace do I forfeit when I do not come to Jesus?

What pain do I carry when I do not bring it to Jesus?

What trials or temptations am I facing right now?

Is there trouble in my life today?

Do I feel discouraged today? Can I describe it?

Verse 1
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear.
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer.

Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.

Verse 2
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged.
Take it to the Lord in prayer!

Three Words

This quote from author Timothy Keller is intriguing. “To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything.”

The desire to be loved and understood is a natural human need. Friends, this is part of God’s creative plan. There are days when we feel lonely or like we’ve been ignored. You probably don’t have to think long to recall a specific situation, group, or gathering where you felt unnoticed or excluded.

This week, I reflected on three words: The Lord knows. They are simple but profound. My first thoughts went to everyday life. He knows when I am happy, angry, sad, or fearful. Yet, I sensed a deeper, more meaningful truth and looked to the Bible for insight. There is a wealth of hidden meaning in these words.

The Lord knows the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever.
- Psalm 37:18 (NKJV)

In our English Bibles, we see “Lord,” “God,” and “the Lord” used without distinguishing among them. We read these words and often miss their true meanings. However, in the Hebrew Scriptures, we can see the differences between the names. God’s specific names offer us a glimpse of His character and reveal the deeper meaning behind them.

“The Lord” is the Hebrew name for Jehovah. This name is used most frequently and appears over 6,500 times in Scripture. Every time we see “The Lord” in verses, it reminds us that He is a relational, personal God. The Lord wants to have a personal relationship with you and me. We are precious in His sight.

“Jehovah is the aspect of God that relates to His creation personally ... Jehovah is the God who personally reveals Himself to us, often through the trials and struggles we face.” (Dr. Tony Evans, The Power of God’s Names, p. 45)

Now, let’s explore the meaning of “knows.” This word comes from the Hebrew word “yada.” It signifies knowing deeply and through experience, including observation, care, recognition, instruction, or punishment.

Instead of running into the open arms of a loving God, many of us turn to people, food, activities, or other things to soothe our emotions. It is God’s desire for us to seek Him with our whole heart. He wants to know us deeply and have personal relationships with us.

The Lord knows… a relational and personal God who understands everything about us on a deep level. Even though He is aware of our sins and flaws, He continues to pursue meaningful, intimate relationships. The end of Keller’s quote sums it up perfectly: “To be fully known and truly loved is a lot like being loved by God.”

Head to Heart

Dear Ones, there is so much going on in the world, as shared in the daily news. We can easily become distracted, fearful, and anxious. Sitting at my desk this morning, I am thinking about friends and family who live all around the world.

I ask each of us this question: “Where do you run?”

Caught in the whirlwind of your day and week, does your heart feel lonely, angry, frightened, or sad? Share your heart with Him. He is waiting to hear everything you want to tell Him.

And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.
- Romans 8:27
