The prophet Isaiah speaks of the coming child who will bring hope and deliverance to the people. During Christmas, we often sing songs and reflect on his royal, glorious, and sovereign titles found in the book of Isaiah. Let’s pause and take a closer look today.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. -Isaiah 9:6
Wonderful Counselor
This also comes from the Lord of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom. -Isaiah 28:29
This promised one will be unique. His character will be divine. He will be extraordinary and even astonishing. This child will guide His people with excellence. He will be knowledgeable and skillful in all things and will speak wise words of counsel. He is our Wonderful Counselor.
Mighty God
Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! -Psalm 24:8
The coming king will have great strength and might. He is a brave warrior. This child will lead his people with authority, competence, and courage. He will rule with fortitude and boldness. He is the Mighty God.
Everlasting Father
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. -Psalm 145:13
Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! -Revelation 19:6-7
The coming king will reign for all eternity. His kingdom will endure forever. He will keep every promise because he is faithful and trustworthy. Lift your voices in praise to the Everlasting Father!
Prince of Peace
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. -Isaiah 26:3
Lord, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us. -Isaiah 26:12
Our hearts long for perfect peace. This child will offer peace to those who trust in him. He has promised to establish peace among the nations. He has gone before us, and we can rest in him. He is our Prince of Peace.
