Where are you right now? I don’t mean which country, state, or city. I’m asking you to look in the mirror and honestly share where you are in your heart, mind, and soul. If you’re like me, you have trouble doing that. Maybe you sweep those thoughts and feelings under the rug, or you put on a smile and push through. Sometimes, we crawl into a quiet corner and hope to disappear for a while.
The Psalmist, King David, speaks honestly and boldly to the Lord in prayer. In Psalm 61, we see evidence that he is going through a time of deep despair. He offers a helpful example for us to follow when we're struggling.
Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
- Psalm 61:1
David asks the Lord to hear his cry. The word “cry” means to express a strong feeling or emotion, often caused by distress, pain, or sorrow. Yes, he is facing a difficult situation. The second phrase is his request for God to listen. I love that! He approaches the Lord with great emotion, asking Him to hear his cry and listen to his prayer.
In the second verse of this Psalm, King David repeats the word “call,” emphasizing his plea as he summons the Lord’s attention.
From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; Lead me to the rock that is high above me.
- Psalm 61:2
First, he calls out to the Lord in desperation, reaching out from his anguish and misery. Next, he openly shares his true feelings with God. He admits that his heart has lost strength and that he feels weary and weak. Finally, David asks the Lord to lead him to the highest place—the ROCK that is higher than David, the King. This is a powerful expression of his humility. He places his trust in the Lord to deliver, protect, and provide for him.

For You have been a refuge to me, a strong tower in the face of the enemy.
- Psalm 61:3
David now shares his personal experience. The Lord has been his refuge—a shelter during times of danger, trouble, or anxiety. David has found safety in God's protection when he needed a secure place to retreat.
He understood that a “tower” offers military protection. During a siege, people would take shelter in the city’s towers to avoid enemy attacks. David has experienced the strength and security of the Lord Almighty. He is a strong tower in times of trouble.
