Do you ever find yourself lost in deep thought, reflection, or contemplation? Perhaps you are guilty of “mental gymnastics” or over-analyzing a particular situation or problem. However, careful evaluation or deeper study of a truth can yield meaningful insights, understanding, and discoveries that will greatly benefit us.
When I feel perplexed, anxious, or overwhelmed, it helps to recall and reflect on Jesus’ wise words from The Sermon on the Mount.
And which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
- Matthew 6:27-29 (ESV)
Why are you anxious?
Your thoughts may be filled with anxiety and worry, but you cannot add time to your life. The Lord has determined the precise amount of time—days, hours, minutes—allocated for each of our lives.
With this question, Jesus gestures toward the rolling meadows surrounding the Sea of Galilee. Why do you worry about your clothing and let doubt occupy your thoughts? The grassy fields are adorned with a wide variety of wildflowers in many different colors.
Consider the lilies.
I can imagine Jesus pointing to the various flowers surrounding the crowd of people. “Look at these flowers.” But even more, reflect deeply and consider their very existence. Do you see how they grow? They stretch their heads toward the sun and drink in the drops of rain or morning dew.
These amazing flowers do not stress, labor, or agonize over the color or size of their petals. Instead, they spend their brief days shining with glory for the One who created them and adorned them in a beautiful array.
Even Solomon.
King Solomon asked the Lord to grant him wisdom to govern the Lord’s people with skill, understanding, and discernment. The Lord rewarded him with great wisdom and unimaginable wealth.
This verse in Matthew’s gospel encourages us to reflect on the beauty of the lilies—the flowers of the fields—and to acknowledge that their beauty far surpasses any splendor surrounding King Solomon and his magnificent royal court.
When I doubt or struggle with anxious thoughts, my eyes aren't focused on my Heavenly Father. He will provide for me and care for me. Will I choose to release my anxious thoughts and trust Him completely?
Head to Heart
Recently, I have reflected on the phrases of the following poem and identified specific areas in my life where I need to let go of anxious thoughts and trust more in the Lord’s care and provision for all my needs. I invite you to join me and prayerfully “consider Him.”
Consider Him
When the storm is raging high,
When the tempest rends the sky,
When my eyes with tears are dim,
Then, my soul, consider Him.
When my plans are in the dust,
When my dearest hopes are crushed,
When is passed each foolish whim,
Then, my soul, consider Him.
When with dearest friends I part,
When deep sorrow fills my heart,
When pain racks each weary limb,
Then, my soul, consider Him.
When I track my weary way,
When fresh trials come each day,
When my faith and hope are dim,
Then, my soul, consider Him.
Clouds or sunshine, dark or bright,
Evening shades or morning light,
When my cup flows o'er the brim,
Then, my soul, consider Him.
