Backpacking, hiking, and camping—what do those words conjure in your mind? Maybe you think of the glorious outdoors—beautiful scenery, sunshine, trees, and starry skies at night. However, different memories may flood your mind—stormy weather, failed campfires, and sleepless nights on the rocky ground.
In the past, we’ve had camping experiences that included excellent meals, hiking, canoeing, and campfire conversations late in the evening. Other outings were not as enjoyable—rainy days, wet clothes, burned pancakes, and sleepless nights.
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”
- Philippians 4:12 (NIV)
The apostle Paul did a lot of “camping” during the years of his ministry. There were days when his mission team walked many miles with little food. We know he experienced struggles and difficulties—times of scarcity and hunger.
“I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.”
- 2 Corinthians 11:27
In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul tells them that he has learned the secret of living in every situation. He pronounces to others, “I have enough. I am content.” Paul learned the secret and practiced living with contentment.
Learning does not just happen. We must pursue and consistently practice expressing our thankfulness. Paul calls us to live daily, in every circumstance, with the spirit of contentment.
Enjoy God’s gifts of abundance because He delights in blessing His children. During those times of need, recognize that His provision will be enough and His strength is available in each situation you face.
“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”
- Philippians 4:13
Relying on our strength will accomplish little. Paul’s life was an example of godly living in humility. He recognized that Jesus Christ was his source of strength.
Head to Heart
Pursue the secret of contentment.
Strive to focus on God in every circumstance. A simple gratitude list is helpful because it directs our attention to the good gifts in our lives.
Jesus Christ is your source of strength.
Acknowledge your need and ask God to give you the strength to complete the work He has called you to do.
I can live humbly in challenging times and enjoy abundance in prosperous times.
It’s not about having NOTHING. It’s about having ENOUGH.

I certainly needed to read this and was reminded of contentment this last week when all plans were changed during our time with family. Even though it wasn’t what we had hoped for we saw the time as sweet and a week to remember! God is good to show us there are blessings even in those kind of weeks!!
