It was the summer of 1980 when a group of us rode our bicycles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. In Kansas, we pedaled past cornfields with temperatures soaring to 110°F (43°C), scorching the highway. Upon reaching the Rocky Mountains, I discovered that the inner tubes had melted inside the tires of my Schwinn bicycle.
We drank plenty of water every day. As I pedaled, the soles of my feet felt extremely hot. Each evening, we were eager to run cold water over our feet. Our bicycle adventure took us into a parched and barren area, and at times, our thirst felt unquenched.
I Search and Thirst for You
O God, You are my God; I earnestly search for You. My soul thirsts for You; my whole body longs for You in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
- Psalm 63:1
In this Psalm, David wanders through the Judean wilderness. He feels disconnected and distant from the Lord. His soul longs for and thirsts for fellowship with his God.
Can you feel the passion and deep desire in David’s prayer? He is searching for the One, True God. There is a longing in his heart, and David recognizes that only God can satisfy it.
Gaze Upon Your Power and Glory
I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory.
- Psalm 63:2
David shifts his focus from the arid wilderness to God’s sacred sanctuary. His recollection of the tabernacle makes him acutely aware of the Lord’s power and glory. Notice this significant change in David’s perspective as he transitions from the reality of his present situation to the powerful qualities of God.
Your Unfailing Love
Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you!
- Psalm 63:3
The psalmist gives us a beautiful gift as we immerse ourselves in God’s holy scriptures. His situation is challenging—dry, weary, desolate—yet David recognizes God’s faithful, loyal love. He offers praise to the Lord. His love exceeds anything we could ever ask for or need.
I Praise You
I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
- Psalm 63:4
David’s praise continues. Can you feel the intensity? As long as the Lord gives him breath, David will praise Him. The image of hands raised to the Lord in prayer signifies openness to the Lord and total dependence on Him. David understands that his situation is dire and that only the Lord can meet his deepest needs.
Head to Heart
Perhaps you have also faced intense heat and thirst. Remember that moment when your throat was parched and you felt an overwhelming desire for water.
Have you ever felt disconnected or distant from the Lord? He wants to fill your cup. Wait for the Lord. Seek Him earnestly. Take time to be still and quiet before Him.
