Childhood friends. High school buddies. College peers. Work colleagues. Each phase of life brings to mind different people. You might recall specific events, conversations, or outings with various individuals from each stage of your life.
Friends are important, but imagine being called “the friend of God.” Mentioned in the Bible, this man obeyed God and moved very far from his homeland to a strange, unfamiliar land. What would it feel like to leave your family behind with the promise that God would give an incredible legacy for your future? What kind of faith or trust would such a step require?
In his New Testament letter, James highlights a key moment in Abraham’s walk with God. Abraham trusted the Lord and followed His guidance for many years. (Note: We know from his story in Genesis that Abraham was not perfect, and his sins are recorded numerous times. Still, he chose to return to the Lord and walk in obedience.)
Right with God
Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
- James 2:21 (NLT)
The phrase, “to be right with God,” echoes in my mind and touches my heart deeply. The author highlights Abraham’s act of obedience when he took Isaac to Mount Moriah. He placed his son on an altar and was ready to sacrifice him to the Lord. Abraham heard the voice of the angel of the Lord, and he replied, “Here I am!” (Genesis 22:11)
Faith and Actions Work Together
You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.
- James 2:22 (NLT)
What was Abraham’s daily walk with God like? How did he communicate with the Lord? In Genesis 22, we gain insight into his conversations with God. Abraham listened for God’s voice, and his actions demonstrated genuine faith. (See Genesis 22:1-3 and 22:10-12.) His faith was essential for his relationship with God, and his obedient actions proved his faith.
The Friend of God
And so, it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.
- James 2:23 (NLT)
The example of Abraham’s life offers encouragement and hope to each of us. Reflect on these statements:
He believed God.
God counted him as righteous because of his faith.
He was called the friend of God.
In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah shared these inspired words about Abraham. “But as for you, Israel my servant, Jacob my chosen one, descended from Abraham my friend.” (Isaiah 41:8)
Abraham was not a perfect man, but he believed in God. His faith wasn't simply stored away as a treasured possession; it was actively lived out. Abraham practiced his faith even when God asked him to do difficult things. Because of this, God declared him righteous. Abraham was ‘the friend of God!’
