How big is your world? My exposure to the world has been quite limited. As I write today’s blog post, I am on an airplane returning from a ministry trip to Malaysia and Indonesia. New people. Different cultures. Many languages. A wide variety of educational backgrounds, professional experiences, and jobs. We attended a Christian Fellowship with individuals from 29 different countries. My eyes have opened wider, and my mind and heart have been challenged. There is much to learn and many ways for me to grow. (Believe me, I haven’t arrived yet!)
Jesus wasn’t afraid to engage in conversation with people, even if they were different from Him. The Gospels remind us of how He looked at the crowds with compassion. Perhaps you remember singing this song in children’s church:
Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children of the world.

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them.
- Mark 10:13 (NIV)
Children: Bring Them to Jesus
Jewish families traditionally take their children to recognized teachers for blessings. Even now, parents bring their young ones to spiritual leaders, seeking prayers that affirm their value and bestow blessings upon them.
Disciples: Send Them Away
But all too often, Jesus’ disciples missed the worth and value of the people who came to Him. In this particular Scripture, they scold the parents and tell them not to bother Jesus, implying that He has more important work to do.
Jesus: Let the Children Come
When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
- Mark 10:14 (NIV)
Mark shows his readers Jesus’ genuine emotions. He expresses frustration with the disciples and irritation at their lack of care and attention to all people—young and old, rich and poor. Jesus welcomed children and pointed to their example of humility and complete dependence.
We are all children in the eyes of our Heavenly Father. Jesus invites everyone to come to Him and receive His free gift of eternal life and the kingdom of God.
Head to Heart
Over the next few days, take time to notice people—at the store, in your neighborhood, or on the street. Are you open to seeing the people around you each day? Or do you walk right past them, ignore them, or dismiss them because they are different?
Ask the Lord to show you their value and worth, regardless of how young or old they are, their current station in life—rich, poor, or middle-class—or their abilities. How can you engage them in conversation, show care, or pray for them? Invite them to come and follow Jesus.
“Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
- Mark 10:15 (NIV)
Thank you … and welcome home!
