Many years ago, I had an opportunity to work in a potter’s studio. Jackie is an amazing potter, and I love watching her work. The skill and strength of her hands, along with her creativity in designs, are beautiful. Her pottery pieces include coffee cups, serving bowls, and snack trays, as well as decorative pots, lamps, and vases. As an artist, Jackie designs, creates, and produces many types of pottery pieces.
Reflecting on this time in the potter’s studio, my thoughts drift to our Heavenly Father and His creative work. He designs and creates according to His perfect will and purpose. It is amazing because God truly sees the value and worth in every single person.
Sometimes, people – you and I – question our purpose, doubt our worth, and wonder if we matter or make a difference. We often struggle with our importance, value, and purpose in life. Paul has this beautiful reminder for us in his letter to the Romans.
But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’” Does the potter not have the right to make some pottery out of the same lump of clay for special purposes and some for common use?
–Romans 9:20-21
The Lord wants us to trust in His sovereign plan, which includes the creation of each individual person. We have been created by the skill of His hands and for His divine purpose.
But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.–Isaiah 64:8
Our Heavenly Father is the potter with a perfect design for each piece of clay. I marvel at the work of His strong and creative hands. According to His plan, the Master Potter forms each of us for the purpose of bringing glory and honor to His name.
Head to Heart
Let’s pause, quiet our hearts before the Lord, and reflect on Paul’s questions in Romans 9:20-21. Do not ask, “Why did You make me like this?” Rather, let’s ask, “How can I best serve You because I believe You have made me for Your purpose, plan, and glory?” Lord, in wisdom, You have created each of us – some for special purposes and others for common use – I trust Your wisdom and plan completely.
My Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You are the Sovereign, Creator God. I confess there are times when I question Your design and struggle with doubt. Open my heart and help me accept the plan and purpose You have for my life. I want to completely trust You and live my life to bring glory and honor to Your name. Amen.

Thank you, Brenda. I have recently felt quite physically weak, like I don’t have the strength to live here or to do the tasks in front of me. And yet God is working in amazing ways. Thank you for the scripture. It was very timely.
