I was on my knees beside the bed in my dorm room. “Lord, please guide me. I can’t make this major decision on my own. Make it very clear.” I stayed on my knees, and I prayed and waited. The voice was not audible, but the Holy Spirit was very present. Then, I heard a decisive whisper, “If you want to walk in the center of My will, you must break your engagement.” There it was, God’s leading. His guidance and direction came as I stayed on my knees and waited for the Lord. He gave me the strength and courage, and I obeyed.
That day was unusual, and I have only experienced something similar a couple of other times in my adult life. However, I believe God works best in my heart, soul, and mind when I bow down on my knees before the Lord. This is a posture of humility before the Sovereign Almighty God of the universe.
Come, let us worship and bow down,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God,
and we are the people of His pasture,
and the sheep of His hand.Psalm 95:6-7
As I worship and seek the Lord on my knees, the tensions of control and fear begin to unwind, and my heart opens to the leading of my Good Shepherd. This is an opportunity for personal confession and surrender. I must be truthful and tell you that there are days when I resist meeting the Lord on my knees. Why? Because I want to hold on to my selfish ways. I want to hold onto my “control” and make my own decisions rather than yield to the Lord of heaven and earth. There are days when I am a wayward sheep.
When I pause and remember how the Lord has led and directed me in the past, I recognize my need to bow down on my knees before Him. Yes, take time and kneel before the Lord. Bask in silence with Him and acknowledge He is the Sovereign Almighty God.
Lord, we seek Your guidance for today. We need help to figure out the details of our lives. You are the Good Shepherd. You’ll lead us to green pastures and still waters. You will also walk beside us in the dark valleys. Yet, we must make a choice. Will we surrender to You?
SURRENDER
(Author Unknown)
May we run
into waters unknown
And valleys below
If that’s where You’re calling.
May we stay planted
in lands and riverbeds
No matter how dry
If that’s what You’re asking
May we live this life
In complete surrender
because it was never ours
to begin with
Head to Heart
When I humbly bow on my knees in worship and prayer, my attitude shifts from self-focus to God-focus. Each day, I will pause and kneel before the Lord. The song I have included is four minutes long. I invite you to take time, bow on your knees before the Lord, and listen to this song. Allow your heart and mind to be quiet and prayerful. Worship the Lord.
