My very first airplane flight was in October 1979. I was 21 years old. The trip began in Philadelphia, PA, and flew to Pittsburgh, PA; Los Angeles, CA; Honolulu, Hawaii; Guam; and finally, I landed in Manila, Philippines—almost 36 hours of travel. This journey allowed me to complete my student teaching at Faith Academy and spend time with missionary friends serving in the Philippines.
God also began to open my eyes to the vast beauty of His creation—breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. A group of us traveled north of Manila to Baguio for our Christmas celebration. We marveled at the majesty of the mountains and the beauty all around us.
May your glorious name be praised! Be exalted above all blessing and praise! You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the hosts of heaven worship you.
- Nehemiah 9:5b-6
In this prayer, Nehemiah evokes images of God's mighty power. Creation is a stark reminder of His omnipotence. The Lord is all-powerful. Look at the skies, the heavens, and the stars. Consider the earth, sea, and everything in them. He alone is God.
We serve an Almighty God who possesses all power and authority. The Scriptures teach us that He is mighty and strong. In the New Testament, Paul writes to the Ephesians that He can do far more abundantly than all we ask or imagine (see Eph. 3:20). Truly, nothing is too hard for the Lord.
Isaac Watts wrote the text of this beautiful hymn:
I sing the mighty power of God, that made the mountains rise;
That spread the flowing seas abroad and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey.
Head to Heart
Genesis 1 summarizes the days of His creative power. Read the chapter and praise God for His all-mighty power.
Day 1 – Day & Night
Day 2 – Sea & Sky
Day 3 – Land & Plants
Day 4 – Sun, Moon, & Stars
Day 5 – Birds & Fish
Day 6 – Land Animals & Humans
We view God's artistic masterpieces in the beauty of sunrises or magnificent sunsets. How often do I pause and praise Him for the mighty power He has displayed through His creation? This attribute of God—omnipotence—provides assurance for our personal relationship with the Lord. We can bring each of our burdens, cares, and needs to Him. Take some time now to come before the mighty Lord of heaven.
Ah, Lord God! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and Your outstretched arm! There is nothing too hard for You.
- Jeremiah 32:17
