Centuries ago, King Jehoshaphat of Judah received alarming news. He faced a serious challenge as multiple enemy armies advanced toward Jerusalem. The king heard the report and immediately sought guidance from the Lord. His people gathered at the temple to pray and ask for God's direction regarding the approaching attack on their nation.
Lord, the God of our ancestors, are You not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in Your hand, and no one can withstand You … If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in Your presence before this temple that bears Your Name and will cry out to You in our distress. You will hear us and save us … Our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.
- 2 Chronicles 20:7-12
The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel, son of Zechariah, and he delivered these powerful words to the congregation.
You will not have to fight this battle … Stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you … Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged … the Lord will be with you.
- 2 Chronicles 20:17
Jehoshaphat humbled himself before the Lord, and the people followed his godly example. They bowed down in worship before the Lord. The Levites joined together with loud voices to praise the Lord.
Early in the morning, the people began to march down the road to Tekoa, and Jehoshaphat addressed them with these powerful words, “Have faith in the Lord your God.” Then, he appointed the singers to lead the army.

Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise Him for the splendor of His holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: “Give thanks to the Lord, for His love endures forever.” At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves.
- 2 Chronicles 20:21
The king chose men to lead with singing and praise to the Lord. Our holy God is eternal, and His lovingkindness lasts forever. Finally, we read about the Lord’s deliverance for Judah’s army. They didn’t have to fight the foreign armies! We must never forget that His ways and thoughts are far beyond anything we could ever imagine or dream.
At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves, and they were defeated … no one had escaped.
- 2 Chronicles 20:22, 24
Problems, challenges, and troubles are part of life on this earth. Jesus shared this vital truth with His followers.
I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
