Honey is a sweet and natural delight. I often add some to my hot tea, drizzle it on my Greek yogurt, or spread it on toast. Growing up, we always had honey on the breakfast table, and my taste buds learned to savor this delicious substance.
In Psalm 19, David shares that God’s Word is sweeter than honey, even the drippings of the honeycomb. And he tells us the Holy Scriptures are true and will endure forever.
The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.
They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.-Psalm 19:7-10
He points out the life-giving qualities in verses 7-9. Since the dictionary is my friend, I opened the pages to understand better the meanings of the words David chose to describe God’s Word.
Perfect (excellent, complete) – restores the soul (bring back to the original) – SOUL
Sure (reliable, confident, good character) – making wise the simple (discernment, judge what is true) – MIND
Right (just, in accordance with what is good) – rejoicing the heart (take delight, joyful, to be glad) – SPIRIT
Pure (genuine, authentic, real, true) – enlightening the eyes (instructive, giving spiritual light) – BODY
Clean (unstained – white as snow) – enduring forever (lasting, without end, eternal)
True (genuine, authentic, truth) – righteous altogether (wholly and completely upright)
These words are rich with meaning and give guidance and direction for our complete being – body, soul, mind, and spirit. The law of the Lord leads us toward eternity and the salvation of the whole person – our eternal sanctification.
The law of the Lord is perfect…Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
Psalm 19:10 tells us God’s Word is sweeter than the honey we harvest from the honeycomb. In the summer, a worker bee lives for about 38 days and works diligently to produce ½ teaspoon of honey after visiting about 1,000 flowers. This sugary substance can sustain human life and make the brain work better.
Head to Heart
Just as honey can bring healing to the body, God’s Word (His instructions, commandments, and laws) has the power to heal people from their sinful souls. Do I long for the sweetness of His Word? Do I take time each day to sit and savor the guidance, instruction, and wisdom He has provided me? Am I applying His Truth to each area of my life and rejoicing in the blessings He offers to me?
My Prayer: Lord, I love the sweet taste of honey on my tongue. It’s my heart's desire to long for the sweet taste of Your Word and to hunger for Your instruction more every day. Forgive me when I’m in a big hurry, and do not take the time to taste the sweetness of Your testimony, precepts, and law. Speak to me and nourish my body, soul, mind, and spirit through Your Word.
