The young children begged their grandfather to tell them a story. Even the adults in the room wondered which tale he might share from his younger years. Grandfather’s stories were always full of adventure, people, and excitement. The unexpected twists in the plot kept everyone on the edge of their seats, followed by the dreaded words, “We’ll have to continue the story next time.” Little voices cry, “Please, we can’t wait that long.”
When we thumb through the pages of the Bible, we find many stories—the lives of actual people—Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob, and Joseph. Moses' life spans 120 years, spread over three segments of 40 years each. Through many decades in each one’s life, the Lord had lessons to teach. God asked these people to complete difficult tasks, travel to a new land, serve faithfully, and trust him in difficult circumstances.
God's Word shares real stories about many individuals and these stories help us learn and grow. We can identify and often relate to the Lord’s work in their lives. David, the psalmist, calls those who have been redeemed by the Lord to share their story.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story.
- Psalm 107:1-2 (NIV)
David commands us to thank the Lord and reminds us that the Lord is good. Our Almighty God extends his loyal, covenant-keeping love to us. David declares the Lord’s love is everlasting!
Have you ever wondered why your story is important? Other people need to hear about the difference God has made in your heart and life. Your story opens the door to tell them about Jesus, our Redeemer and Savior. We can speak words of thanks for his gift of eternal life. It is an opportunity to praise the Lord for his goodness and love.
Fanny Crosby wrote the lyrics for one of my favorite hymns, Blessed Assurance. Although she lost her sight as an infant, this woman wrote more than 8,000 hymns and gospel songs.
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of his Spirit, washed in His blood
This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long
This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long
Our loving and faithful Lord has redeemed us. King David reminds us to tell that story for God’s glory and for others to hear about his gift of salvation and everlasting love.
Head to Heart
I would like to encourage you to take some time to write your story. Keep it simple. Keep it short. Here are some prompts to help you get started.
When did you first hear about God and His Son, Jesus?
What is the name of the person who was “telling their story about Jesus” to you?
When did you ask God’s Son, Jesus, to forgive your sins?
How has your life changed because of the Lord’s goodness and love?
