For three summers, I worked as a swimming instructor and lifeguard at our community swimming pool. One area of the pool was roped off, and the water depth was twelve feet.
The advanced swimming classes practiced surface diving and retrieved weighted objects from the bottom of the pool. Reaching the bottom of the deep end took training, arm and leg strength, and breath control. The joy was immense when a swimmer returned to the surface with the object in hand!
A woman came into my office some years ago, and I’ll never forget our incredible conversation. She shared one of her favorite Bible study tips with me. After reading a passage of Scripture, she spent time identifying specific attributes of God. These became her offerings of worship and praise back to the Lord.

Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.
- Job 11:7-9 (ESV)
Your heavenly Father invites you to search out “the deep things of God.” We cannot “measure God” because we are finite beings. However, we can practice, aspire, and seek to know Him better.
The apostle Paul combined two conflicting truths and used them as declarations of praise. While we do not comprehend the vastness of our Almighty God, it is our privilege to learn more about the Lord, grow in understanding, and grasp more of His boundless majesty.
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!
- Romans 11:33
Head to Heart
This Bible study tool has enhanced my walk with the Lord. The next time you read a passage of Scripture, take some time to identify the attributes of God revealed in the text.
For example:
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.
- Ephesians 2:4-5
God is merciful.
God is loving.
God is gracious.
Dear Lord, thank you for extending Your mercy when I have acted sinfully, unwisely, or made foolish decisions. I praise You for the gift of steadfast love. You have stretched out Your gracious hand and given me new life in Christ Jesus. I want to grow in my knowledge of You. Help me to understand the deep things of God better. Amen.
I invite you to incorporate this practice into your Bible study time. What measureless attributes of God would you like to explore and comprehend in more profound ways?

This reminded me of the hymn "O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus". His love, one of the many deep, deep things of God.
