Let’s reflect on the verse from Zephaniah 3:17. I have been meditating on this passage for several days. Its words are powerful and illuminate many aspects of God’s sovereignty. The verse stands out and shines at the end of Zephaniah (which pronounces many dark judgments) and draws our hearts toward the Lord in awe, reverence, and worship.
The Lord your God is in your midst, the Mighty One, will save.
The Lord is always with us, but we often forget this truth. It may seem like God is far away, but this verse provides a certainty we can cling to. Talk to Him. Cry out to Him. Watch for His good gifts and blessings each day. Practice saying, “Thank you, Lord.”
The Lord is our mighty Savior. He is powerful and able to save us from sin, hardship, and even eternal death. This expresses a deep sense of personal faith. God will give us strength to endure, and He will fulfill all His promises. Hold fast to the Mighty One.
He will rejoice over you with gladness.
Do you find it hard to receive God’s affection, joy, and delight? Maybe you feel unworthy or think you've committed too many sins. Friend, Jesus paid the full price for our redemption. His eyes overflow with love and compassion for each of us. When we humbly turn to Him, the Lord is filled with great joy and gladness!
Close your eyes and think about this truth: The Lord takes great joy and has deep affection for you. He is very pleased that you are one of His chosen ones.

He will quiet you with His love.
I’m reminded of a young child facing a tough moment, but he seeks and finds comfort in his mother’s arms. She whispers in his ear and holds him close to her heart. In a few short moments, the child relaxes and becomes calm.
Are your thoughts and emotions racing? Is your To Do List longer than the hours in your day? Take five minutes and quiet your heart and mind. Ask the Lord to flood your thoughts with His love. Recite or read several Bible verses about God’s love. (Here are a few suggestions: Numbers 14:18a; John 3:16; Romans 5:5; 1 John 3:1.)
I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore I have continued My faithfulness to you.
- Jeremiah 31:3
He will rejoice over you with singing.
Music nurtures my soul. My mother had me start taking piano lessons at a very young age, and I continued through high school. Mrs. Ellenberger assigned sight-reading from pages in the hymn book, and this became a well-developed skill. After dinner, I would practice my piano lessons and often sang the words as I played hymns.
People sing. Birds and other creatures sing. Pause and say: “God rejoices and sings over me.” What does God’s singing sound like in your imagination? Can you hear His melodious voice?
You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and the hills will burst into singing before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
- Isaiah 55:12
