When I began taking piano lessons, my parents bought a used upright piano. Some friends helped my father load the piano into the back of his pickup truck. As the story goes, the piano was not tied securely and slid off the truck. The piano was not shattered, but it did require some repair work. The piano technician also tuned the piano.
My piano teacher believed every student should be able to sight-read any music set before them, so she included hymns in my weekly piano lessons. After dinner, I would sing the words to the hymns as I played. When I sat down to play the piano, my heart was open to the Lord and filled with great joy. Each note was sweet and melodious to my ears.
My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises! Wake up, my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song.
- Psalm 57:7-8 (NLT)
David, the Psalmist, is running from King Saul. He asks the Lord to have mercy on him and protect him. Even as David hides in a cave in the wilderness, he boldly proclaims, “My heart is confident in you, O God.”
What difficult circumstance, trial, or pain are you facing today? Psalm 57 sets our focus on the Lord: “My heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises!” The cave may be dark and lonely, and the world around you seems shattered.
David gives us the words to speak and cry out to the Lord. “Wake up, my heart!” Our hearts and minds stray from our precious Savior without practice and discipline.
Open your hurting, wounded heart to the One who truly understands and loves you. Sing to the Lord because your confidence is in Him. Sing words of praise!
Robert Robinson was only 22 when he wrote the hymn, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. He invites the Lord to tune his heart and remind him of God’s amazing grace and abundant mercy. Loud songs of praise should flow freely from our mouths!
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Hymn written by Robert Robinson
Come thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace.
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the Mount, I'm fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God.
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.
Oh, that day when freed from sinning
I shall see Thy lovely face
Clothed then in the blood washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy wondrous grace
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry
Take my ransomed soul away
Send Thine angels now to carry
Me to realms of endless day
Oh, to grace how great a debtor,
Daily, I'm constrained to be.
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love.
Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
Hymn for Worship: Come Thou Fount –
Head to Heart
When I play the piano, my heart and thoughts focus on the Lord. The chords and harmony draw me into a time of praise and worship.
How do you keep your heart in tune with the Lord? Our hearts will wander from the Lord. We have a choice. It’s a daily decision made many times throughout the day.
Despite your current plight, I encourage you to turn to Psalm 57. Read the words David penned. Meditate on these words and lift your voice in praise to the Lord.
