Recently, at church, I saw a toddler walk over and hug the legs of an adult. Mind you, it was a random adult. From the young child’s perspective, those legs belonged to one of his parents. The parents were engaged in the group conversation but quickly noticed what was happening. They called their child’s name, and the shock on the little one’s face revealed his astonishment. He was not clinging to his parent's legs!
In John 10:14, Jesus stated, “I am the good shepherd. I know My own, and My own know Me.” During His earthly ministry, Jesus compassionately cared for those who came to hear His teachings and seek His healing touch. He demonstrated to others what it meant to know the sheep and treat them with a good shepherd's love and care.

Know that the Lord, He is God! It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.
- Psalm 100:3 (ESV)
The Lord: He is God
Many people traditionally believe that King David wrote Psalm 100. In this Psalm, readers are encouraged to acknowledge the Lord. This verb emphasizes that we “recognize, accept, confess, and appreciate” that the Lord is indeed God.
The Hebrew phrase translates to, “Know that Yahweh is Elohim!” There is profound meaning in the names of God. Through the name Yahweh, God expresses His earnest desire to establish a covenant relationship with His chosen people. Elohim serves as a reminder of His creative power as the God of creation: “In the beginning, Elohim created the heavens and the earth.” –Genesis 1:1.
We are the Sheep of His Pasture
Next, this Psalm presents four repetitive phrases that follow the call to know God.
He made us
We are His
We are His people
The sheep of His pasture
We pose the obvious question: Why is there repetition in this verse? Repetition aids our learning and reinforces important information. It facilitates the application of deeper Biblical truths in our lives. Additionally, let’s remember that we tend to forget significant truths found in Scripture.
And you are my sheep, human sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Lord God.”
- Ezekiel 34:31 (ESV)
As a shepherd cares for the sheep, the Lord will always watch over you and me. Lord, I confess that I am a wandering sheep. I seek Your guidance and care. Today, I place my worries, struggles, and anxious thoughts into Your strong hands. I surrender to Your will, purpose, and direction for my life. I trust You completely!
Head to Heart
Breath prayers are phrases from Bible verses that we recite in rhythm with our inhalations and exhalations. They allow us to meditate on God’s Word, giving us a moment to pause and connect with the Lord.
Below are three examples to use during your quiet time with the Lord.
Inhale breath: Know that the Lord
Exhale breath: He is God
Inhale breath: He made me
Exhale breath: I am His
Inhale breath: You are My sheep
Exhale breath: I am your God
