“Open the window shade; it snowed last night!" my mom exclaimed. The tall pine trees outside my bedroom window were heavy with white fluff. After breakfast, I bundled up and went outside for a walk. The stillness and quiet enveloped my soul as the snowflakes continued to fall to the ground.
This is a memory from many years ago. Even today, I love to walk outside when it is snowing. The quiet beauty inspires me to thank the Lord and reminds me of His redemptive work in my heart and life.

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the Lord, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.”
- Isaiah 1:18
One of my favorite professors at Bible College presented a dynamic lesson on this verse. God’s Word is powerful and resonates within our hearts and minds every day.
The Invitation
“Come now, and let us reason together.”
The Lord invites each of us to come and sit with Him. The term "reason" conveys deep thought and reflection. God wants us to comprehend the reality and consequences of our sins. He desires to resolve the matter.
When we sit with the Lord, we have an opportunity for honest evaluation—a deep look in the mirror He holds before us. Will we recognize our urgent need for a Savior?
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
- Psalm 51:1
Our Sinful Condition
“Though your sins are as scarlet.”
“Though they are red like crimson.”
These phrases point attention to our sinful hearts. Each of us is “dead in our trespasses and sins.” The colors, scarlet and crimson, denote blood. The consequence of sin is the reality of death.
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight; so You are right in Your verdict and justified when You judge.
- Psalm 51:3-4
God’s Resolution
“They will be white as snow.”
“They will be like wool.”
God’s cleansing will make us spotless, pure as fresh fallen snow. He powerfully describes His forgiveness of our sins. When we acknowledge and confess our sins, God determines the verdict: forgiven!
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
- Psalm 51:2, 7
Head to Heart
The Lord invites you to sit with Him. Pause today and meditate on the phrases in this verse.
Find two pieces of fabric: one red and one white. Take them to a quiet place and sit down. Set them in front of you or on your lap.
Touch the red cloth. Acknowledge your sin and your need for a Savior. Confess any sin in your heart right now.
Pick up the white cloth and hold it in your hands. Thank the Lord for His mercy, grace, and complete forgiveness. Praise Him for the work He is doing in your life.
