My boss, Jerry, and his wife, Sandra, were dedicated students of God’s Word. I still remember his heartfelt words about the apostle Paul’s prayers for the believers at Ephesus. Paul has two prayers in the book of Ephesians, and they include everyone who believes and trusts in Jesus Christ.
Over the past week, I have taken time to reflect on the words and phrases in Ephesians 3. This blog post will be a little different as I share some thoughts for us to consider while meditating on the words of this powerful prayer. I invite you to engage your curiosity as we explore Paul’s prayer together.

For this reason, I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.
- Ephesians 3:14-15
Imagine the apostle Paul kneeling and fervently praying these words on our behalf to our Heavenly Father.
He presented his petitions to the Lord with humility and submission.
He affirms that we are God’s beloved children—members of His family.
I pray that out of His glorious riches, He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being.
- Ephesians 3:16
Say your name aloud. This prayer is for you.
Consider the glorious riches of the Father – more riches than we can even imagine (see Ephesians 1:18 – You will inherit all of God’s riches).
You receive strength and power through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Turn to Him and wait expectantly for His generous provision.
So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ
- Ephesians 3:17-18
This is Paul’s prayer request for his fellow believers: that Jesus would reign supreme in our hearts.
Keep trusting because Christ dwells within the believer’s heart.
Rooted and established in love – This phrase reminds me of “a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when heat comes” (Jeremiah 17:8).
The words in verse 18 aim to help readers comprehend the vast, four-dimensional scope of Christ’s love.
Width – His love extends to the entire world (John 3:16).
Length – His love stretches from eternity past to eternity future.
Height – His love elevates both Jews and Gentiles to heavenly places.
Depth – His love is deep enough to save us from sin’s shame and the eternal death of Satan’s grasp.
And to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all fullness of God.
- Ephesians 3:19
This is an ongoing process for the believer in Jesus Christ. He does not expect us to be perfect, but rather He calls us to humbly walk with Him today.
The Lord is not harsh. Instead, He shows kindness and compassion to everyone who seeks Him (Jeremiah 29:13).
What words of love might He speak over you today? He calls you into fellowship and desires for you to experience the full measure of His love, grace, and acceptance.
