Years ago, I heard a young couple share their passion for mission work in the Philippines. Dave and Liz believed God had called them to a new place. They left their hometown, family, and friends and moved across the world.
The Lord prompted me to partner with them. A few years later, I had the opportunity to spend time with them in the Philippines while I was completing my student teaching at Faith Academy. Dave and Liz taught me a great deal during those months as I observed and participated in their community, home church group, and the local culture.
Maybe you’ve gone through a time when the Lord prompted you to move to a new job, state, or country. When He asks us to leave comfort behind, we can trust that He will go before us and stay with us.
The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.”
- Genesis 12:1
At the end of Genesis chapter 11, we learn that Abram’s father, Terah, moved his family from Ur of the Chaldeans to Haran. The plan was for them to go to Canaan, but instead, they settled in Haran. Terah died there (Genesis 11:31-32).
Listen to God’s Voice
The Lord told Abram to leave Haran—his home and family—and promised to show him the land where he would settle. Abram listened to the Lord and obeyed His command. Remember, he was 75 years old when he started this journey to a new land. Abram took his wife, Sarai, along with his nephew, Lot (Genesis 12:4-5).
So, Abram left just as God said, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Abram took his wife, Sarai, and his nephew Lot with him.
- Genesis 12:4-5
Worship God
When they reached Canaan, the Lord appeared to Abram and promised to give this land to his descendants. Abram built an altar to the Lord at Shechem and Bethel. He recognized the Lord’s guidance in his life and worshiped Him.
He moved on from there to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent between Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. He built an altar there and prayed to God.
- Genesis 12:8
Abram listened to the Lord and obeyed. The Lord promised to bless him, and He told Abram that he would be a blessing to all people. He took time to worship God.
Head to Heart
Listen to God’s Voice
Spend time reading your Bible. Meditate on a specific verse you just read. Then take time to sit quietly in His presence. Ask the Lord to reveal what He wants you to do today.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.
- Proverbs 3:5-6
Worship God
Make time each day to worship the Lord. He is an amazing God and worthy of our praise.
Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure His greatness.
- Psalm 145:3
Dear Heavenly Father,
You have promised to guide Your children. I invite You to direct my steps today. Would You guide me according to Your perfect will and purpose? Do not let me stray from the path You have chosen for me.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
