Have you ever lost something valuable? Maybe you couldn’t find your wallet, keys, or phone. Think about how you felt as you searched the house desperately—panic, fear, and a feeling of loss.
When this has happened to me, I have looked frantically everywhere I could think of, often mumbling to myself, “I know I put this in a safe place. Why can’t I find it?”
The book of Proverbs contains 31 chapters of wisdom—knowledge, understanding, and discernment come from the Lord. He invites us to accept His words and treasure His commandments.
As students of God’s Word, we find observation to be a useful tool as we carefully examine Bible verses. Let’s look at the words and phrases in Proverbs 2:1-6.
My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding.
- Proverbs 2:1-2
This is a personal invitation to the reader, “my son, my daughter.” We are invited to sit with Him and receive instruction from our wise and loving Father.
Receive my words – Hear and accept God’s offer and benefit from His words.
Treasure my commandments – Adore, cherish, and embrace the precepts of the Lord.
Be attentive and gain wisdom—Tune your ear to the Lord’s voice (this requires regular practice).
Incline your heart to seek understanding – Open your heart and mind to His teaching.
For if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding.

Still, choosing to spend time in the Bible and valuing the Lord’s teachings is our personal choice. This verse encourages our active participation.
Cry out – Tell the Lord that you need His insight and perspective.
Lift your voice – Express our desire for His understanding.

If you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures, then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.
- Proverbs 2:4-5
When we seek wisdom, we find the Lord. When we combine the fear of the Lord with the knowledge of God, we become more devoted and faithful disciples.
Picture yourself as an explorer on a treasure hunt.
Pursue as if you’re searching for gold or silver.
Imagine yourself on a quest to find hidden treasure.
Seek to understand the fear of the Lord.
Discover a deeper and more personal understanding of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
- Proverbs 2:6
God’s Word teaches us that He alone is the source of wisdom. He truly grants wisdom! The Lord delights in giving knowledge and understanding to His children.
Let the treasure hunt begin! Search God’s Word with eager desire and passion.
You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
