Backpacking, hiking, and camping—what do those words conjure for you? Maybe you picture the glorious outdoors—beautiful scenery, sunshine, trees, and starry skies at night. But other memories may flood your mind—stormy weather, failed campfires, and sleepless nights on rocky ground.
In the past, we’ve had camping trips with excellent meals, hiking, canoeing, and late-night campfire conversations. Other outings were less enjoyable—rainy days, wet clothes, burned pancakes, and sleepless nights.

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

The apostle Paul did a lot of “camping” during his ministry. There were days when his mission team walked many miles and had very little to eat. We know he faced struggles and hardships—times of scarcity and hunger. Paul chose to trust God in every situation he faced. It was a daily decision.
I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
- 2 Corinthians 11:27
In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul tells them he has learned the secret of living in every situation. He declares, “I have enough. I am content.” Paul learned the secret and practiced contentment.
Learning does not just happen. We must pursue and consistently practice expressing our thankfulness. Paul calls us to live daily, in every circumstance, with a spirit of contentment.
Enjoy God’s gifts of abundance because He delights in blessing His children. In times of need, recognize that His provision will be sufficient and His strength will be available in every situation you face.
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
- Philippians 4:13
Relying on our own strength will accomplish little. Paul’s life exemplified godly humility, recognizing that Jesus Christ was the source of his strength.
Head to Heart
Pursue the secret of contentment.
Paul said, “I know what it is to …”
Gratitude will transform your heart and thoughts. Gratitude makes what we have sufficient, forming the foundation for peace.
A simple gratitude list is helpful because it directs our attention to the good gifts in our lives.
Jesus Christ is your source of strength.
Paul said, “I can do everything through Christ.”
Acknowledge your need, and ask God to give you the strength to complete the work He has called you to do.
Strive to focus on God in every circumstance.
I can live humbly in challenging times and enjoy abundance during prosperous times.
It’s not about having NOTHING. It’s about having ENOUGH.
