This eighteen-year-old memory is still very clear in my mind. I was directing an event in Chicago, IL, when I received a phone call. The baby will be here soon. Oh, my goodness! By the time I arrived at the hospital, little Miss Riley Elizabeth had already been born. We were thrilled to welcome a little girl into our family!
Over the years, we have watched her grow and have celebrated many happy occasions with her. We have shared books, snuggles, laughter, games, and movies. We are grateful for every moment we have spent together. Riley has brought so much joy to our lives, and we thank the Lord for her life!
Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, rejoice.

Today we celebrate! We rejoice with Riley and applaud her many high school accomplishments. Congratulations to our fine young granddaughter!
On another note, I’m reminded that I tend to focus on major celebrations and overlook the daily joys and pleasures. God’s blessings and good gifts come in many forms. Yet we often rush through our days, missing the moments of celebration. Here are some of my favorites:
A beautiful sunrise or sunset
Listening to the birds sing in the early morning
A summer rainstorm
Children laughing and playing games
Paul continues in his letter to the Philippians with these stirring thoughts. Consider what is excellent and praiseworthy. Fill your mind with what is true and honorable. Ask yourself: Is this honest, respectable, trustworthy, and ethical?
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
- Philippians 4:8
We should choose to fill our minds with thoughts that are virtuous, upright, and wholesome. Think about the things that bring wonder and delight to your soul. Search your heart and ask: Is this a pleasant gift from the Lord’s hand?
There are many wonderful milestones to celebrate in life. Take time to rejoice each day. We need to be mindful of the daily blessings and gifts from God’s hand. He delights in His children and gives generously.
