The honeybee is one of God’s creatures that has always fascinated me. Every colony is devoted to its leader and works hard to ensure the survival of all its members. They are responsible for tasks like cleaning and caring for the new bees, guarding the hive, and collecting pollen and nectar. Honeybees play a crucial role as pollinators for crops and a wide variety of plants.
These busy workers create a sweet, natural treat—honey. In summer, a worker bee lives about 38 days and works hard to make half a teaspoon of honey after visiting around 1,000 flowers. This sweet substance can sustain human life and enhance brain function.
In Psalm 19, David describes God’s Word as being sweeter than honey, even the dripping honeycomb. He highlights that the Holy Scriptures are true and will endure forever. These written words are eternal.
He highlights the life-giving qualities in verses 7-9. The words David used to describe God’s Word carry deep and meaningful significance. Let’s take a closer look at these.
The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
- Psalm 19:7 (NIV)
His law is perfect (excellent, complete, faultless) – refreshing the soul (to revive, renew, and rejuvenate) – SOUL
His statutes are trustworthy (dependable, constant, and righteous) – making wise the simple (discernment, understanding, keen insight) – MIND
The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.- Psalm 19:8 (NIV)
His precepts are right (just, honest, in accordance with what is good) – giving joy to the heart (pleasure, gladness, thrill) – SPIRIT
His commands are pure (genuine, authentic, refreshing) – give light to the eyes (provide spiritual instruction, guidance, and inspiration) – BODY
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.- Psalm 19:9 (NIV)
Reverential awe and respect for God is pure (righteous, good, white as snow) – enduring forever (lasting, without end, eternal) - ETERNAL
His decrees are firm (genuine, steadfast, unchanging) – righteous altogether (wholly and completely upright) - PERFECT
These words are filled with deep meaning and offer guidance and direction for our entire being—body, soul, mind, and spirit. God’s Word guides us toward eternity and the salvation of the whole person—our eternal sanctification. The law of the Lord extends care to everyone and provides nourishment for a person’s life.
They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;
They are sweeter than honey, yes, than honey from the honeycomb.
- Psalm 19:10 (NIV)
God’s Word is sweeter than honey from the honeycomb.
Head to Heart
Take a moment to consider these questions:
:: Does my heart yearn for the sweetness of His Word?
:: Is it a daily priority to sit and savor the Scriptures?
:: Am I seeking His guidance, instruction, and wisdom for my life?
My Prayer:
Lord, I love the sweet taste of honey on my tongue. It’s my heart’s desire to crave the sweet taste of Your Word and to hunger for Your instruction more every day. Forgive me when I’m in a rush and don’t take time to savor the sweetness of Your commands, precepts, and law. Speak to me and nourish my body, soul, mind, and spirit through Your Word. Amen.
