Morning walks are a regular part of my daily routine. The past few weeks have been so cold that I haven’t gone outside during those early morning hours. I have missed this time when I usually enjoy the sunrise, the birds in the sky, and the quiet.
When I go for a walk, I take time to pray for others and for situations in my life. The Lord reminds me of friends’ names and details about their lives. I even pray out loud because it helps me stay focused. Sometimes, I start singing a hymn or worship song.
This well-known hymn is among my favorites.
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

As for us, we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.
- Micah 4:5
In the early years of our marriage, one of our Bible professors gave us wise advice: walk in the evening and pray together. Walking provides an opportunity to connect with a spouse, child, or friend. Over the years, I have enjoyed walking with friends in different states and countries. We’ve shared life stories, prayed, laughed a lot, and sometimes shed tears during our walks.
A daily walk with God deepens my spiritual life. Spending time with Him each day — through Bible reading, prayer, and silent reflection — is vital for my relationship with Jesus. Fellowship happens when I actively seek the Lord’s guidance, wisdom, and direction every day. He is my Savior, Friend, and Lord. I want to remain close to Him.
Head to Heart
Walking offers many benefits for physical, emotional, and mental health. It also acts as a powerful reminder of the importance of building a deep spiritual connection with God.
Feel the breeze as it moves. Breathe in the beauty of flowers, grass, and trees. Smile as birds, squirrels, and rabbits dart across the path ahead. Tilt your head back and look toward the sky. Watch the cloud formations, the sun, the moon, and the stars. Take a moment to cherish the beauty of this world.
Writing in a journal each evening is a helpful habit. It encourages us to reflect on the day, practice gratitude, and relax before sleep.
I urge you to take a few moments to jot down two or three observations from your daily walk. Keep your entry simple so it easily fits into your daily routine. Write a sentence of gratitude to the Lord for the beauty of His creation and the gift of this day.
And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
- Deuteronomy 10:12
