Scripture: John 15:12-17
SHOW NOTES:
Jesus said, “I am the True Vine … Abide in me” (John 15:1, 4). We may read these verses in John’s Gospel too quickly and miss the depth of His words. He is speaking to His closest disciples just hours before His betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Jesus told them, “The Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.” Now, Jesus continues His instruction with the following command.
This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.
- John 15:12-14
Jesus defines friendship in terms of sacrifice and obedience (verse 14). Christian friendship involves a commitment to follow the Lord’s teachings and become partners in His work. Jesus tells His friends that He chose them and that He has appointed them to produce fruit.
These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
- John 15:17
